If there’s one thing Yassi Pressman can assure those who are looking forward to seeing her upcoming thriller The Tapes, it’s that they can definitely expect to see what could probably be a first in the Philippines in terms of storytelling.
Yassi, who stars as SPO1 Alice Lagaac in the series, said part of why she agreed to do the project is the fact that it seeks to offer something new to the Filipino audience.
The 24-year-old Kapamilya star also noted that it got her even more excited when she found out that she would be playing a role unlike she those she has done in the past.
“Nu’ng pinitch ‘to saken nila Direk last year, Sir Deo (Endrinal of Dreamscape) really said that he wanted to do this. At nu’ng narinig ko, it was very exciting. To be honest, du’n pa lang, mapapa-isip ka. Kasi I’ve never heard anything like it before,” she said.
She went on: “Marami siyang maiiwan sa’yo na mga tanong kung bakit and that’s what’s gonna keep you hooked kaya mo papanuorin. Parang ‘Ha? Paano nangyari ‘yun?’ Maraming ganu’ng moments eh. So for me, it was exciting.”
According to Yassi, it's far from her character of Alyana Arevalo-Dalisay in the top-rating ABS-CBN series Ang Probinsyano.
“Kasi ibang-iba siya siya kay Alyana na lagi pong nakikita sa FPJ’s ‘Ang Probinsyano’ gabi-gabi. At para sa akin, si Alyana iisa na kami. So kahit anong mangyari, kahit walang lines ‘yung eksena, kaya kong isipan on-the-spot kasi it’s me,” she stated.
Talking more about her experience while doing the six-part series, she added: “When I played Alice, it was very exicting kasi kailangan ko talaga siyang pag-isipan. We have so many things to play around with. Tapos sila Direk kasi kahit on the spot may mga ibang ideas na naiisip si Direk na magpapa-twist pa lalo ng story. It was exciting — the whole experience was.”
Set in the 90s, Yassi said the vibe in Baguio while filming the show made her and the rest of the cast feel like they were in a setting from two decades ago.
“Feeling ko nakatulong din po kasi siguro sa amin ‘yung sa Baguio talaga kami nag-shoot. And ‘yung mararamdaman mo ‘yung eeriness and ‘yung creepiness. But at the same time, meron ding lightness kasi si Alice at si Cruz very, very close sila. Para silang best friends pero hindi. So nagba-balance siya du’n sa contrast nu’ng story,” she said.
The Filipina-British actress, who teams up anew with Sam in the Brad Liew-helmed iWant original series, reveals that she and her co-star have gotten even closer. It can be recalled that the two worked together in the 2018 romantic-comedy film Ang Pambansang Third Wheel.
“I think mas naging close pa kami ngayon kasi tulad po nu’ng sinabi ko kanina, nag-lock in sa Baguio. So pagka-ganun, talagang magkasama kayo pagka-gising, ‘pag dinner, ‘pag lunch. Ganyan. It was really the whole production that got really, really close. Pati sina Ms. Cherie, sina Sir Ricky. Lahat kami magkakatabi lang. And playing the guitar. It felt like we were in the 90s talaga. Kasi walang signal. Totoo talaga ‘yung nandu’n sa story. So the bond is really, really tight,” she said.
She added: “Actually ‘yun ‘yung kinaka-excite ko kasi wala pa talaga akong napapanood na parang ganitong vibe. It’s very far from ‘yung mga mahal natin na pelikula, mga mahal natin na series.”
With the Filipino audience becoming more open when it comes to accepting new forms of visual storytelling, Pressman believes it won’t be hard for the Filipino audience to embrace what the series has to offer.
“Kasi parang nag-bobroaden na ‘yung taste din ng mga tao na minsan gusto natin tumawa, minsan hindi. And I think it’s beautiful that ABS-CBN has provided a platform for the Filipinos po siyempre na anywhere, anytime. Sa iWant pwede mong makuha ‘yung mga projects na hindi po natin makukuha on the mainstream TV tsaka po sa cinemas. So it’s a very experimental platform,” she said.
Asked how she would convince the Filipino audience to see the iWant thriller, she said: “Because you want to see something new.”
The Tapes follows the story of two cops named Sonnyboy (Sam Milby) and Alice (Yassi Pressman) who start unraveling a mystery behind a series of tapes containing disturbing incidents.
Other cast members include Ricky Davao, Felix Rocco, Perry Dizon, Barbara Ruaro, Brian Sy, and Cherie Gil.
