Aspiring authors will have the chance to be mentored by the country's top storytellers in ABS-CBN Books' upcoming workshop called "Project Foreword." Charo Santos-Concio, Ricky Lee, Ardy Roberto, and Mari Kris “Makiwander” De Luna Ogang will be part of the said project.
In an interview with the mentors at the contract signing of the project, each of the mentors shared their thoughts on what makes a "good story."
According to Charo, characterization is very important when telling a great story.
"The characters have to resonate with me. I really have to know them so well so that the situation you put them in or the narrative you bring your characters into will be engaging. I have to empathize with the characters," she said.
Why is Charo Santos a big fan of ‘Crash Landing On You’?
Meanwhile, Ricky stated that a good story should somehow address the "brokenness" of the reader.
"Ako ang konsepto ko lagi sa workshops ko lahat tayo broken na mga tao and so 'yung story na-address niya 'yung brokenness ko and natutulungan ako na mabuo ako or if broken pa rin 'yung istorya until the end, natutulungan niya akong magkaroon ng strong desire na mabuo niya ako eventually. Then I think it's a good story," he said.
For Makiwander, a story is good when it imparts a lesson to the readers.
Ardy added, "For me a good story should give the reader hope that even his world is broken, there's always hope. It should be able to show that ito 'yung mundo mo ngayon pero pwede pala ganito, so from a broken world, a world full of disaster and chaos, pwede pala maging ganito. So it gives the reader hope na oo nga pala may pag-asa pa."
Applicants can send their original and unpublished works in any genre to ABS-CBN Books until April 6. There is no age limit for the applicants. Twenty aspiring authors will be part of the first round of the program.
