After directing the horror film Hellcome Home, director Bobby Bonifacio Jr. brings to life his BL film My Lockdown Romance which stars Jameson Blake and Joao Constancia. The Star Cinema director shared their casting process.
“Actually ang haba nung proseso na pinagdaanan after writing the script and finding the right fit for the roles. Ang hirap eh. Kasi nag-auditions kami. Nag-offer kami to see different people. Yung klase ng characters at yung klase ng role na pino-portray is minsan hindi madaling tanggapin ng ibang mga artista. Parang ganun. Parang there’s some hesitations in certain aspects, ganyan. And I’m just glad na si Joao and si Jameson when they auditioned and when I saw them fit for the role, ang tapang nila eh. Kasi right on tinanggap nila ito and at the same time, ang initial reaction nila is, ‘Yes I’m happy to take on this challenge and paano ko ba mabibigyan with justice and respect itong mga characters na ‘to?’”
Jameson admitted he took some time to think it over before accepting the role. “I auditioned for the role and hindi naman ako nagdalawang isip. Siguro I was just making sure that I really liked the role and I wanted to try something different so I just needed more time to think about it if I really wanted to do the role. I just kept scanning through the script and everything. Eventually nagustuhan ko yung role talaga so that’s what I went through,” he shared.
Unlike Jameson, Joao said he immediately jumped at the opportunity once he found out he got the role. “I didn’t hesitate to accept the role because this is a new experience for me and a new project for me to do. And I was super excited talaga to do it. I talked to the director and they helped me to understand the role and they just also gave me the freedom to learn and play my character. I’m super, super happy and super grateful because again this is a new experience for me and it’s a new movie that’s coming out for everyone to watch and I’m super happy and grateful na natanggap ako dito sa movie na ito,” he explained.
In the film, the two men play the roles of guys who reconnect online during the lockdown and shows the challenges of dealing with old ghosts coming back to haunt them. Tom (Jameson), must face the feelings he has long suppressed for his best friend from college Kendrick (Joao) who recently returned from Hawaii and reconnects with him. Through their social media and online conference calls they share during the pandemic, My Lockdown Romance explores how once broken relationships can be repaired even during these trying times.
