Regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, the American wrestler known as The Undertaker (real name Mark Calaway) bid a final goodbye to the wrestling ring last November 22 during the annual World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Survivor Series event after making his debut at the same event three decades ago. Joining him at the event were other well-loved wrestlers like Shawn Michaels, The Big Show, and Ric Flair.
Even WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon couldn’t help but appear emotional after making one last announcement to present the 55-year-old wrestler. “Tonight marks the end of an era… An end of an era of the most storied career in history, it'll never be duplicated."
He would later take to Twitter to pay further tribute to the wrestler. “The measuring stick. The locker room leader. The Phenom. Three decades ago today, @Undertaker changed the landscape of sports-entertainment. His legacy is incomparable, his impact immeasurable. #ThankYouTaker. #Undertaker30”
As one of wrestling history’s most beloved figures, The Undertaker received messages from other WWE superstars after the event through their respective social media accounts.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
"30yrs ago today, he made his iconic #SurvivorSeries debut. Like EVERYONE - I was in awe as a rookie in the @WWE when his first words pierced my soul as he walked in the dressing room and said, ‘Muthaf**ka.’ True story! Honored to share the ring with you, my brother. #ThankYouTaker”
“After three decades of @undertaker committing wholeheartedly to the @WWE, tonight we bear witness to the end of an extraordinary body of work. For all the in ring moments and as a member of the @WWEUniverse, I say #ThankYouTaker!"
"We’ve faced each other in every type of match and created some of the most special moments in my career. Standing across the ring from @undertaker was always a daunting experience but I’m excited to hear the gong toll one last time. #FarewellTaker"
As for the man himself, he posted some photos along with a simple message. “The final bell tolls… #ThankYou.”
