Former Pinoy Big Brother Big Winner and engineer Slater Young provided tips on how to save money on your home project or home renovation in his latest YouTube vlog.
"Iyong dream ko talaga for the channel is to make engineering and building more approachable, especially for students, for the new homeowners, existing homeowners, and fans of engineering and architecture," he said in the vlog.
First tip he provided is to look for different suppliers.
"We save when we look for different suppliers... In terms of a house we save a few hundred thousands or even millions. Dito sa Skypod (the name of his house with wife Kryzz Uy) I can confidently say we were able to save 10 to 20% alone," he relayed.
Another tip Slater shared is to go through every line of the supplier's quotation.
He said, "With our pool, nagpa-quote kami ng two suppliers. The other one was more expensive so we didn't get them. The problem is, and I am not going to name the supplier, the problem is the supplier did not put in lights for the pool, did not put in 'yung mga steps sa gilid, he did not include that in his quote and medyo mas maliit pa 'yung mga pumps na ginamit. That was my mistake because I didn't check his quote and I trusted his word when he said 'kasama na 'yan.' Hindi ko ni-line by line 'yung quote niya."
Sunday sun day. ☀️ - A lot of people warned us about having a pool because we most likely won’t use it daw. The secret, i think, is to have a pool that is easily accessible so you’ll end up using it more - it’s especially inviting under scorching hot days like today. A small downside is that - since it’s the first thing you see, it’s important to keep it constantly clean and clear. Worth it though. 👌🏼🏊🏻♂️
"He ended up being more expensive than the other guy. That was a sad story, medyo stressful, but something you can avoid if you do it line by line. And if you have questions, feel free to ask your supplier."
Another advice he shared is to make sure everything is in writing. "Don't trust 'yung mga usap-usapan lang or handshake deals," Slater remarked.
Slater's fourth tip is the design will influence the overall cost of your house.
He explained, "For example a glass house will be a little bit more expensive. Siyempre mahal ang glass. A house with a lot of moldings, a lot of designs will be more expensive. And modern houses without a lot of partitions, a lot of walls, and [with a] minimalist design will be cheaper."
Last tip that he shared was to make sure to hire professionals.
"Hire architects, engineers, plumbers, and electricians, and make sure they are professional and trustworthy. Ang dami kong nakikita na mga people that are just building their home or extending using a foreman or pakyawan. The problem with that is these people will not come back because you have a problem with your home in the future," he said.
