Thirty-year-old JC Santos admitted he has little problem when his directors give him specific points to look ugly, or unappealing, romantic or abandoned on screen. “Kase I will always make sure na hindi na ako yung nasa camera eh. Kapag inalam ko kung ano klaseng tao yung character ko, makakalimutan ko kung sino ako. Gusto ko makilala ng viewers is the man I am playing.”
Internalization is the process of knowing the “pagkatao ng character” and concentrating to bring a character to life. This is something JC knows how to do given the number of complex characters he’s taken on through the years.
JC, started out as a stage actor during his college days at U.P. Diliman. With many productions under his belt, he has no inhibitions when it comes to stripping down for a role. “Ako kase I don’t really mind eh. I am aware from the script for example that it is needed then I will do it.
“Kung ano ang instructions ng direktor, I will know what to do already, kahit na sinong direktor. I simply know how to manage taking my clothes off. When I do it, it should look appropriate with my character’s actions. Hindi puwedeng basta hubad lang.”
He explained how normal it can be for him to show some skin since he started doing stage acting in his teens. “Okay ako sa pagpapakita ng katawan kase,” adding with a smile. “Ginagawa ko rin siya when I was 15 years old in the theater sa U.P.” Then he blurted out, “Kase noon may reputation din akong ‘hubadero.’ Hahahahaha!”
So after becoming a jealously angry Marco Cabrera in FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano and a poetically hopeful Fidel in 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, JC is at it again in director Andoy Ranay’s Open. “When my character Ethan and Rome (Arci Muñoz) agreed to an open relationship, tama lang na nasa bedroom kami and we are in our undies eh.
“It’s a really beautiful scene kase what you will notice is already the problem they both have sa relasyon nila eh. Bearing it there, tapos nagpapaka totoo lang silang dalawa na tumatabang na ang pagmamahalan nila so they need to agree to explore an open relationship, kahit nagtatalo sila,” JC said of his latest movie.
