Open, as one of the entries in this year's Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino, discusses a controversial and taboo theme about open relationships. During the press conference on Thursday, August 29, director Andoy Ranay said that this is the best time for Filipino audiences to see this kind of movie and discuss the topic.
"I think this is the best time para mai-kuwento ang ganitong klaseng kuwento. Hindi naman tungkol sa kabet-kabet, tungkol sa mga kerida-kerida, but more importantly being in a mature relationship," Ranay told the press.
Open, the movie, follows the story of a long-time couple played by Arci Muñoz and JC Santos, who will try an open relationship, meaning they would allow themselves to acquire sexual encounters with strangers with some agreed rules.
Adding few disclaimers, the Call Me Tita director said that this can be an introduction to what an open relationship is about, hence related topics like "polyamorous" and "swinging" ideas is not part of the movie.
"Ang dami nating hindi [pa] alam. That's why this is the best time for Filipino audience na makapanood o mag-open ang kanilang utak doon sa reality of life na open relationships exist," he explained.
Direk Andoy also shared how one of his friends has been in an open relationship for more than 10 years now. "I have high respect for them. Kasi hanggang ngayon mahal na mahal pa rin nila ang isa't-isa," he said.
Meanwhile, lead actress Arci, admitted that she became hesitant to do the film at first when she learned the theme of the movie. For her, she would never imagine herself going into an open relationship like her character Rome.
"At first I was really hesitant, because I came from a very conservative family, my parents are really straight-edge Christians. So my stand talaga, I was like, basta ako hindi talaga. Kasi for me it's cheating with consent," she said.
The Kapamilya actress also revealed that this project took almost one year to make. It was even originally a sexy comedy.
"So habang tumatagal - isipin niyo isang taon namin ginawa itong pelikulang ito. Ang haba ng naging proseso hanggang sa naging seryoso, parang tatlong beses kaming nag-re shoot ng love scenes. So sulit talaga," she explained.
Open will start screening in cinemas, starting September 13, along with other PPP entries such as The Panti Sisters, Cuddle Weather, LSS (Last Song Syndrome), G!, I'm Elenya L, Watch Me Kill, Circa, Lola Igna, and Pagbalik.
