Harry Styles has turned down the role of Prince Eric in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, Variety magazine claimed in a report on Tuesday.
After months-long speculation, the former One Direction member confirmed that he will not be participating in the said project, for which his casting as the prince were described as premature. Currently, Disney is already looking into other actors for the part, and a decision is expected to come shortly.
Harry would have been paired with fellow singer-actor Halle Bailey, who in July has been confirmed to play the titular role of Princess Ariel in the much-awaited adaptation.
The reboot of the 1989 classic will be directed by Rob Marshall. In a statement reported by Variety, the filmmaker behind hit films Into the Woods and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides remarked that Halle has all the qualities they’re looking for in the role of Ariel.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall stated.
Meanwhile, Disney said that the production for The Little Mermaid is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
