Before he decided to undergo scout ranger training in Camp Tecson in Bulacan last month, Matteo Guidicelli admitted both his girlfriend Sarah Geronimo and his family were initially against his decision. “Sila lahat ayaw muna nila baka masaktan daw ako, mga ganyan. Sa umpisa ayaw pa rin nila. Sabi nila, ‘You’re in the middle of your career. You’re 29 years old. You’re in show business. Why would you leave everything behind?’ But I felt like this is an opportunity of a lifetime. A skill set, lessons learned that nobody can take away. So I had to do it. Okay naman. Masaya naman sila na successful lahat,” he shared during the Sunlife Kaakbay press conference held last July 6 in Pasay city.

When Sarah and his family came to visit him at the camp, Matteo said he was thankful they did not see him during his first few days at the camp which were the most challenging both mentally and physically. “Buti nag-dalaw sila after a week so medyo emotionally stable na ako. Nung dumalaw sila tinour ko sila sa ranger camp at na-shock sila kasi iba eh, siyempre military yung buhay nila dun so I’m blessed to be given the opportunity. So na-accomplish ko naman,” he recalled.

Although he has always been vocal about girlfriend Sarah being his number one priority, Matteo is thankful of how accepting she was of his goals. Matteo said he realized this during her visit. “Sabi ko, ‘Love, naawa ka ba sa akin?’ Sabi niya, ‘Eh gusto mo yan eh. Bahala ka na (laughs),’” he said. Sarah also made sure to be there when he finally graduated from training. “Okay naman. It was very emotional. Masaya,” he added.

Even with his involvement with the Philippine military, Matteo says his showbiz career is not taking a backseat. “Oo tuloy tuloy. The other day may meeting ako sa Viva mag-shu-shoot kami ng pelikula at the end of the month. Marami pa akong projects.  Yung army it will always be part of me. It’s us eh Pinoy tayo kaya dapat maging parte yan ng buhay natin. But yung trabaho din bilang artista it will continue. So normal pa rin. Siyempre gusto natin tumulong sa bansa natin,” he explain
