Playing Princess Ariel is “a dream come true”, according to actress and Chloe x Halle member Halle Bailey on her first lead role in a film.
Disney has finally found its Princess Ariel for its live-action adaptation of the hit animated movie The Little Mermaid.
The film studio announced on Wednesday that child actor and singer Halle Bailey is set to star as the popular princess character.
The reboot of the 1989 classic will be directed by Rob Marshall. In a statement reported by Variety, the filmmaker behind hit films Into the Woods and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides remarked that Halley has all the qualities they’re looking for in the role of Ariel.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall stated.
Halle, for her part, took to Twitter to express her elation at bagging her first-ever lead role in a film.
"Dream come true," captioned the 19-year-old star to a picture of a black version of Ariel.
Zendaya, who was earlier rumored to play Ariel, Halle Berry, and Lin-Manuel Miranda were the first celebrities to have congratulated Halle on the feat.
Halle, who hails from Atlanta, made her foray in Hollywood in 2006 as part of the cast of romantic comedy-drama “Last Holiday” starring Queen Latifah. She has since engaged in several acting projects, the most recent being Grown-ish (2018), where she plays as track athlete Skylar Forster.
In the late years, she and her sister Chloe Bailey, also an actress, have focused on their music career as the contemporary R&B duo Chloe x Halle. They have just released their debut album, “The Kids Are Alright”, which features “Warrior”, a soundtrack from the hit American TV show A Wrinkle in Time. After playing as an opening act in Beyonce and Jay-Z’s On the Run II world tour, the two were invited to sing "America the Beautiful" at the annual Super Bowl LIII last February.
Meanwhile, Disney said that the production for The Little Mermaid is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
Aside from the film, fans are anticipating the live-action/CGI version release of The Lion King, starring Beyoncé and Donald Glover and Mulan, to be played by Chinese actress Liu Yifei.
