Aside from his career as an actor, Richard Gutierrez says that one of his other passions is helping save the environment. “I’ve been doing environmental documentaries for a long time now and I’m a scuba diver so I get to travel around the Philippines a lot. So I’ve become more aware of the environment and different situations in different places so it kind of affects me. So I kind of try and do my part also,” he shared during the Kiehl’s Made Better campaign launch held in Makati city.
During the event, Richard and twin brother Raymond unveiled a limited edition product he designed which was based on an actual photograph he took under water. Proceeds from each bottle sold will directly fund Save Philippines Seas’ and Kiehl’s Philippines partnership to preserve Anilao. “I chose the humpback whale tail because that was my previous encounter in the ocean. The tail looks like an upside down heart,” he said.
Richard said that he is also teaching his two young sons how to be more environmental-friendly. “They know, Zion especially. He hates plastic also (laughs). I try to teach them while they’re still young. Also I think it’s a great time to be alive because of social media, the whole sustainability movement is at the forefront right now. Fashion, retail, everything is talking about sustainability. So right now it’s really getting a lot of attention. So now is the right time to be aware, be conscious about our lifestyles,” he added.
An avid underwater photographer, Richard said he is currently collecting photographs for his first ever exhibit. “Yeah that’s my plan probably next year because I really want to get more material. I’ve been doing it like seven or eight years now. There’s a lot of photos from different places, different experiences. But definitely the one I used here is one of my most incredible encounters,” he said.
