Sunshine Cruz is proud of her first ever Cinemalaya film project.
In her first indie film project this year, Sunshine Cruz said she was happy to be offered the lead role of Nora in Malamaya. “I play a middle-aged visual artist na makikilala niya ang isang mas batang lalake na photographer na yun yung bubuhay ulit sa sexuality niya at magkakakulay ulit ang buhay ni Nora. This is a dream come true for me na maging part ng Cinemalaya 2019 and nung 2013 nagbalik pag-aartista ako. Iniisip ko, ‘Bakit wala ako offer namag-Cinemalaya?’ Gusto ko talaga magkaroon ng ganung movie. Kaya nung dumating sa akin ito, without even knowing the story, I said yes kaagad. Nung na-reading kami kami nakita ko na ang ganda ganda ng movie, ibang iba sa akin. So na-excite ako kasi it’s really challenging,” she shared during the Malamaya presscon held last July 16 in Quezon City.
With the film containing numerous sexy scenes with her and her younger leading man Enzo Pineda, Sunshine said she made sure her three teenage daughters would know what to expect during the film’s gala night. “I know that they will be very proud of me. Maloloka sila. Hindi ko i-e-explain. Matalino yang mga yan. May tiwala sila sa akin and alam nila na hindi ako gagawa ng mga bagay na ikakahiya nila. Of course I know how to protect my children. I told them kasi na bilang isang artista merong mga eksena na kailangan natin gawin para sa ikakaganda ng movie. They’ll be with me sa gala night. They’re supporting me and yung una ngang teaser na lumabas, they’re very proud of it. Sabi nga nila, ‘It’s so indie. It’s so beautiful mom.’ They are open-minded and alam naman nila kahit yung past before, what I did sa films. Hindi ko hinayaan na malaman pa nila sa ibang tao. Ako na mismo nagsabi sa kanila. I had to explain and the kids right now are very smart. Hindi sila judgmental. Nakakatuwa lang talaga na sabi ko nga, kung hindi man nag-work yung marriage ko, I was given three beautiful and smart children who support and love me,” she explained.
Sunshine also shared why she has no plans to bring boyfriend Macky Mathay to the movie’s premiere. “He’s all out support naman sa akin. Papanuorin namin pero huwag na lang sa gala night. Kasi imbis na panuorin niyo titingnan niyo reaction niya di ba? So gusto ko ma-appreciate niyo yung film, hindi yung magiging reaction ni Macky. Huwag na lang. And he understands,” she said.
The 41-year-old actress said she is very happy with the state of their relationship. “Parang sa edad naman namin na ito, parang we understand each other and we support each other. Yung ung maganda kay Macky na sinu-support niya ako kung ano yung nakakapagpasaya sa akin. Hindi siya yung distraction. Inspiration siya. Which is what I need right now in my life. Busy rin siya eh kasi kaka-start lang nung transition. Bago lang si Francis Zamora and he is working for mayor Francis Zamora so very busy din siya but we get to talk naman everyday,” she added.
Even after three years of dating, Sunshine said they would prefer not to rush into marriage plans this year. "Kaka-annul ko lang, wala pang ilang buwan. So for now parang ayaw ko muna pag-usapan. And in God’s time na lang. Wait and see na lang tayo. But for now, kung ano yung set up namin, kung ano yung nangyayari sa akin, ini-enjoy ko muna kasi ka-enjoy enjoy talaga di ba? Sobrang grateful and blessed talaga ako sa mga nangyayari. Parang okay naman na ako,” she said.
When asked if there was a chance she would extend an invitation to her ex-husband Cesar Montano to watch her film, Sunshine dismissed the idea right away. “Huwag na natin pag-usapan. Past is past. Nakuha ko na yung gusto ko. I’m now annulled and I am single again so yun na lang. Basta maganda yung movie, panuorin ninyo. Yun na lang,” she said.
