It has been three years since Angelina “Angie” Mead King shared to the public that she is now a transgender woman and her partner Joey Mead King has been supportive of her coming out ever since.
Angie recalled that she was not planning to out herself at the time but Facebook did it. She started taking hormone pills at the end of 2015, the same year her father passed away.
“Mid-year of 2016, Facebook decides to out me. Hindi ako nagpa-out, Facebook mismo. Actually hindi ko nga alam paano nangyari kasi dati I used to keep two phones, different numbers, different e-mails, hindi sila magka-friends, walang connection,” she shared.
“And then nag-notification nagpadala sa lahat ng friends ko ‘Your friend Ian King (her former name) is on Instagram as Angie Mead’ tapos doon na nagkalat,” she added, saying her friends sent screenshots of the notifications to confirm the news.
Angie was relieved when there was no judgment and she said, “hindi mahirap kasi may support.”
“Life’s been really great. Now as a transgender woman I have more businesses, I’ve had success with my racing career, ang dami kong nagagawa ngayon kasi parang ‘yung weight sa utak ko nawala.”
In everything that she does, Angie said Joey has been her mentor.
“We’ve grown more together after the coming out,” she said.
“We had social support parang nag-normalize lahat parang lahat kami nakahinga parang ‘Huh, parang wala pa lang problema’ very little ‘yung hate and basher. When people see na Joey still stayed with me and we worked it out parang nag no-normalize ‘yung relationship na ‘Kung kaya i-accept ni Joey there’s something we’re not seeing that they may have.’”
Angie shared it wasn’t an easy journey for them and it took a lot of counseling, understanding, and explanation for them to reach where they are now.
