A law seeking to secure actors is being eyed by a member of the House of Representatives in light of veteran actor Eddie Garcia’s death due to an accident during the shooting of a television series he was starring in.

1-PACMAN Party-list Rep. and stepson of the late star Michael “Mikee”  Romero said on Monday that he will sponsor an Actors Occupational Safety and Health Standard bill that seeks to “safeguard the welfare and well-being of all actors working in the television and/or in the movie industries” in the upcoming 18th Congress. The measure is to be known as “The Eddie Garcia Law”.

Romero expects that more than 100 of his colleagues in the House of Representatives will co-author the bill, including an endorsement from Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto, himself a former actor and television host, by filing a counterpart measure.

Earlier, action star and Senator-elect Lito Lapid, who recently co-starred with Eddie in the hit primetime series FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, also vowed to study possible legislation towards occupational safety, particularly for members of the action industry.

"Pag-aaralan namin 'yan kung ano pa, kakausapin natin, magkakaroon ng suggestion mga stuntman, mga direktor. Kamukha ko, ako fight director din ako, stuntman din ako,' yan kailangan meron talagang safety, kaya lang aksidente lang talaga 'yong nangyari sa kanya," he said in an interview.

His statement echoed that of Batangas representative Vilma Santos’, also an actress, who described Eddie’s fate as an “eye-opener.”

“Siguro magiging eye-opener na 'to na karapat-dapat lamang, lalo na kung action films, na in every shooting or taping ay required na meron tayong medics talaga,” she said.

Aside from the bill, Partylist Coalition Foundation Inc., also led by Romero and is the second largest political bloc in the Lower House, eyes to nominate the screen legend for a “posthumous conferment of the National Artist award.”
