EXCLUSIVE: Christian Bables on working on his latest film: ‘Never kong sinabi na hindi na ako gagawa ng gay roles’

After starring in last year’s LGBTQ film A Love Story in the time of HIV which is part of A Trilogy of Love Stories which was co-produced by Boy Abunda, Christian Bables said he is happy that the film will now be seen by more people through a video streaming platform. “I’m very excited kasi pinaghirapan namin ito. Actually last year pa namin ito ginawa at tinapos. Finally mapapanuod na siya ng mga tao. Ang role ko dito isa akong lover ng isang taong infected ng HIV,” he said during the launch of HOOQ Free Play last June 20 in Makati city.

Christian admitted that he was not very aware of the issues tackled in the movie before working on the project. “Ang dami preparation. Nagkaroon ako ng session kay Tito Boy about HIV. Very knowledgeable kasi siya about the issue so sa kanya ako nagpa-educate kumbaga. Kung hindi ko siya aaralin, hindi ko makukuha ng maayos yung nuances na kailangan ibigay nung character. Before this, from 1 to 10 I must say 3 lang ako. Wala akong sapat na kaalaman about HIV. Pero nung ginawa ko ito, nagkaroon ako ng effort aralin. Hindi na lang dahil sa character kundi bilang tao. Ang mga miyembro ng LGBT as tao. They deserve to be heard. Yung kuwento nila deserving na makita at marinig,” he said.

During the press launch, Christian also clarified the issue that he was not keen on doing any more gay roles after his breakout performance in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Die Beautiful. “That’s the thing that I’d like to make clear. Hindi ko alam kung saan nanggagaling pero never kong sinabi na hindi na ako gagawa ng gay roles. Kasi bakit? Tao yan eh. Storya ng tao, bakit ko tatanggihan? Kahit pa ang role ko ay ipis, butiki, or daga, as long as humihinga yan, may kaluluwa, may puso, gagawin ko yan. If you are referring to my TWBA interview with Tito Boy, sinabi ko na pinapaubaya ko sa management kung tatanggap ba muna kami or kung hindi ba muna kami tatanggap ng gay characters. Pero never ko sinabi na hindi na. Magkaiba yung hindi muna sa hindi na so this time around, I think this is the right time for me to accept these kinds of roles again. Kung mamimili ako ng roles, paano ko magagampanan yung main purpose ko bilang isang actor?” he explained.
