REVIEW: Seven Reasons why ‘Between Maybes’ can be one of your favorite ‘hugot’ films

Black Sheep’s latest production Between Maybes starring Gerald Anderson and Julia Barretto should definitely be on your “must-see” list. Here are seven reasons you should be heading to the cinemas to see it now.

7. The film’s score enhances the story.

One enjoyable and intrinsic aspect in the story is its score and the various songs included in the film. Trisha Denise’s “Mahalaga” will tug at your heartstrings and you will laugh at “Dayang-dayang” where Julia and Gerald let loose and dance. Special kudos though to the scorer who made every scene come alive.

6. Not your usual hugot storytelling

Although the physical and the inner story of the film is clear, you don’t get the feeling of being spoon-fed as an audience. Some scenes, however, do not always transition fluidly to the next. Nonetheless, it is a refreshing feeling because it is not predictable and it still comes together in the end. Credit goes to writer and director John Paul Laxamana.

5. Scenes that show the fun and funny side of Julia Barretto

Julia made moviegoers laugh and even clap in several scenes because of the spontaneity, randomness, and spunk she gave to her character. In this film, Julia proves once and for all, that she’s not just a drama actress and that she’s ripe for the portrayal of more roles and characters.

4. Inner story that is relatable

From the very first scene, we are shown the family story of Julia’s character Hazel and so we understand where she gets her rebel spirit. Gerald’s character Louie, on the other hand, hides his pain because that’s who he is as a character—practical and non-showy. In the end though, we understand Louie’s pain that is connected to a core not dissimilar to Hazel’s family.

3. A love story that must have happened to everyone

Everyone probably has experienced this kind of love. Without giving too much away, it is the kind that leaves one feeling, “Awww… pero tama naman. Gets ko sila,’ or “ganun talaga e. Nangyayari talaga yan.”

2. A definite ending

Although the title is Between Maybes, there is no maybe in the ending as the characters clarified whether their love story will progress or not.

1. Actors who make you laugh and then make you cry

The film isn’t drama all throughout. In fact, there aren’t many dramatic scenes but when they want to make you cry, Gerald and Julia deliver. Gerald portrays the lonely slightly aloof Louie well. Despite his aloofness though, the audience cried with Louie and Gerald’s performance of him.
