Iza Calzado to star in MMFF-hopeful film ‘Culion’

After being one of the producers for the digital film Mystified earlier this year, Iza Calzado said she is ready to take on the same role in her latest project Culion which she is also starring in. “Because of my experience with Sanggre productions and when we did Mystified and even before that, gusto ko na talaga to come on board as a producer. Hindi lang ako nabigyan ng pagkakataon. So I figured, as the lead for the film, I could probably swing that deal. So I did. All you have to do is ask di ba? Yun pala gusto din naman nila yung idea,” she shared during the Culion contract signing event held last May 13.

Iza said she is flattered to be bringing to life a script by multi-award winning writer Ricky Lee. Culion is the story about a community in Palawan that was a former leper colony. “I actually first got wind of the story because of Shandii (one of the producers) and then parang birthday ni sir Ricky Lee. Tapos nalaman ko pa yung kuwento tapos sinabi niya na sir Ricky is writing a role for me, with me in mind. Tapos ako yung parang grabe, may himala (laughs). Parang oh my god, pag narinig mo yun. I’ve worked on his material for Sabel. I believe in the project. Of course it’s written by sir Ricky Lee,” she recalled.

Iza said she is is excited to take on the role of Anna, a leper who grew up on the island. “Nabasa ko na yung script. Si Anna ay hopeful. She wants to get out of Culion. She beleives that there will be a cure. Dun siya lumaki eh. Iniwan siya dun nung mga nine years old siya. Kumbaga the mother had to give her up because she had leprosy. All those years, you will see that she is hopeful na one day lahat sila gagaling. But she goes through this journey. Sa umpisa kasi, ayaw niya magkaroon ng emotional attachment kahit kanino sa Culion kasi nga she thinks there will be life after Culion sho she doesn’t want to be stuck there,” she shared.

Culion hopes to be included in the Metro Manila Film Festival this year.
