After formally opening this year’s Sinag Maynila independent film festival last April 3, director and festival head Brillante Mendoza revealed he is still in the early stages of shooting his next big screen project with Piolo Pascual. “Meron akong upcoming project although shinu-shoot pa lang siya. Nakapag-shoot na kami. Hindi pa kami tapos. Marami pa kaming shooting. I was surprised kasi first time ko makatrabaho si Piolo and alam natin lahat na hindi talaga ako nakakapag-trabaho sa mga mainstream actors. So I was happily surprised na si Piolo madali siya mag-adapt sa way of filmmaking style ko, yung aesthetics ko na paggawa ng pelikula,” he admitted during the screening of Sinag Maynila’s opening film Lakbayan.
After shooting in Luzon, the internationally acclaimed director said they still have more scenes to shoot in Mindanao and in the Ifugao region. “It will involve mostly mainstream actors. Matagal pa kasi dahil mag-e-edit pa kami, kumbaga mag-shu-shoot pa kami. Pero offhand, yung kuwento niya tungkol siya sa encounter ng SAF at ng mga MILF or MI,” he said. Although the film has a political theme, direk Brillante stressed that it will be a story about the people and not politics and war. “We won’t focus on the political side. We will focus more on the story of the two groups. And at the same time, we would like to show more the story of Filipinos as a whole, hindi yung may pinapaburan na grupo. Yun ang gusto naming ikuwento at dun namin gusto mag-focus,” he added.
With his most recent recognition abroad for winning Special jury prize for his film Alpha, The Right to Kill at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain last year, direk Brillante said he is not thinking too far ahead on which film festival he plans to bring his latest film when it is done. “Basta ang importante ngayon matapos muna yung film. Gusto namin mapanuod, mabuo muna siya and then we’ll decide after,” he said
