Katarina Rodriguez talks about advocacies on sustainable fashion and peace in Marawi

“Once a month, I’m in Siargao for at least seven days,” shared Katarina Rodriguez. Since there’s no signal on the island, she has to walk to a certain place to find one. “On the way back, I see so many bottles. Medyo nainis ako kasi even if I pick up ten in one day, then next day meron ulit. It’s like never-ending. Then I always end up picking plastic bottles sa shoreline.”

This beach lover is an advocate of sustainable living, which is why she supports like-minded events such as #SperryforGood  “When I found out that they use plastic bottles to make the shoes, I said, that’s what we need! Kailangan talaga na we put our excess packaging to good use, whether it be bottles or boxes or containers,” she explained. “And the shoes look cute, so it’s a very good idea.”

The reigning Miss World Philippines has many advocacies on her plate, and is kept busy by causes close to her heart. “Right now, I’m working on a very big project for Marawi. I have two visits planned: one with Save the Children Philippines, and another with an organization that I’ve worked with called Teach Peace Build Peace,” she shared.

“I’ve been working with Archie Geotina, a good friend of mine from Siargao and an artist. It’s going to be a big event next January 2020, and we’re putting it together in Providence Gallery, Shangri-La Fort. He’s planning on making an installation of Ground Zero in Marawi City and bringing it to the gallery. It’s a great event because it’s giving back to those who were affected by the siege, the children and the youth, and the organization Teach Peace Build Peace. It’s a very big project, really, and it takes up most of my time.”

There has been talk that she has given up on the pageant circuit and has no plans of joining another one after her reign. “Well, if I could I would. It’s super fun and I love representing our country. But because of the age limit and some of the restrictions from the organizations, I can’t anymore,” she clarified. Katarina made a name for herself as finalist in the second season of Asia’s Next Top Model, and again as title-holder of Miss Intercontinental Philippines 2017 and Miss World Philippines 2018. “It’s like the Olympics. You send the best representative, whoever it may be. I believe it should apply to all the international pageants that we participate in.”

“There’s so much I’m doing now,” shared the now-26 year-old. In fact, she is about to try her hand at show business.

“The movie is called G! LU, and we’re starting filming next week. I’m very excited since it’s my first movie. It’s a young cast, parang barkada type. ‘Yung role ko, she’s a sweetheart,” she shared. The fact that the setting is in La Union is another fun factor for this beach baby.

“I’m super excited to be working with Michelle Dee, who’s becoming a good friend of mine,” she said. The reigning Miss World Philippines will also be sharing the silver screen with Miss Multinational Asia 2018 Kimi Mugford, Miss World Philippines First Princess 2018 Chanel Morales, Miss Eco-International 2018 Cynthia Thomalla, and Miss Multinational 2017 Sophia Senoron. Joining them as members of the Valley Boys Club are Ruru Madrid, Derrick Monasterio, David Licauco, Kiko Estrada, Teejay Marquez, Dominic Roque, and Enzo Pineda.

Just like she has done before, Katarina took steps to prepare for her role. “I’ve done workshops before, and may workshops din para mismo sa roles namin sa movie.” Does this mean she plans to pursue a showbiz career then? “I don’t know. I haven’t thought that far,” she admitted. “But I enjoy it naman. I love it, I like working with the production team and other people in showbiz. It’s fun, it’s a craft. So we’ll see.”

For now, Katarina is taking all the opportunities as they come and enjoying every minute while she does. “If you like what you’re doing, you’re really going to enjoy,” she said.
