Jessy Mendiola on waiting for projects: ‘Lahat naman ng artista may cycle’

With the playdate for her movie Stranded drawing closer, Jessy Mendiola said it is hard to predict which movies will do well at the local box office. “Siguro hindi lang natin maintindihan ang gusto ng audience kasi pansin ko for the past year nagbabago ang gusto ng audience eh. Minsan gusto niya ng rom-com, minsan gusto nila drama, minsan gusto nila ng slapstick comedy. So kung may ibang movies na na-release since January, walang maganda yung gross eh. So hindi din puwedeng ma-blame sa isang movie or dahil lang sa akin. Hindi naman yun one-man film,” she explained.

The Stranded star said her Metro Manila Film Festival entry is one example of a film that was given more recognition abroad. “I’d like to share na yung [The] Girl in the Orange Dress nakasama kami sa Osaka film festival. Siguro kung hindi man na-appreciate dito sa Pilipinas, na-appreciate naman sa ibang bansa and that’s enough for us. I am very proud of this movie, yung tulad ng iba gusto ko lang idamay sa ibang movies na hindi naging okay like siguro the past four months or the past three months wala talagang naging okay except Alone/Together yata by Lizquen. But let’s all be honest. That’s a love team and marami talaga silang followers. Sobrang sikat nung dalawa,” she said.

Just like a lot of other celebrities, Jessy is supportive of the plans to move movie openings to Fridays instead of every Wednesday.

After clarifying the rumor that she is planning to move to another network, Jessy admitted it was a challenge to wait to be given new projects. “I feel like lahat naman ng artista may cycle. Marami kami eh. So hindi puwedeng ako at ako lang ang bibigyan. Maraming artista ang ABS-CBN and even yung kabilang network and I’m sure tina-try nilang bigyan ang bawat artista ng trabaho. Nagkakataon lang talaga na wala. So it’s up to you to explore kung anong gagawin mo for yourself and for your career,” she said.
