The Eerie star talks about returning to horror films after more than 40 years.
It’s been more than 40 years since she did her first horror film Itim with director Mike De Leon, which won her an acting award at the 1977 Asian Film Festival. Now Charo Santos is proud to be part of the MIkhail Red project Eerie which had its world premiere at the SIngapore Film Festival last December.
When asked if she thinks her latest work is award-worthy, the talented actress gave a candid answer.
“What can I say? I just gave my best. Alam mo naman, kanya kanyang mata yan, kanya kanyang perspektibo yan di ba? Wala sa aming mga kamay,” she said during the Eerie special media preview held last March 2.
For her role as Mother Alice in a strict all-girls Catholic school set in the 90s, Charo admitted she could relate to the story in a personal way.
“Talagang na-appreciate ko yung character ni Sor Aliche kasi nag-aral din ako sa isang eksklusiblong paaralan para sa mga kababaihan that was run by nuns. So alam niyo naman yung mga pinapatupad na guide posts ng nagpapatakbo ng institusyon and minsan yung mga bata, yung guilt minsan ang nag-mo-motivate ng behavior mo pag bata ka pa.
"Kasi may patakaran tapos pag di mo nasunod may corresponding punishment. And pag bata ka pa, hindi mo pa naiintindihan yung lawak ng mundo so may appreciation ako sa struggle ng isang babae na nanggaling sa very traditional na upbringing,” she shared.
As for her co-star Bea Alonzo, Charo is all praises after working with the talented actress for the first time.

“Bea was only 13 years old when I met her. At talagang nasundan ko ang kanyang career bilang artista at isa siya sa mga hinahangaan ko sa mga kabataang artista. So I felt so excited and I really looked forward to working with her. She’s a very intelligent, intuitive, and generous actress. She works hard. Talagang she comes to the set prepared. Pag break naman, nag-be-break din naman siya from her character (laughs). She’s a true professional. Her attitude towards her craft is admirable,” she revealed. .
