“Finally, Philippines,” wrote one netizen after seeing the stills from the highly-anticipated zombie thriller ‘Block Z’.
As Julia Barretto shared the first look at Mikhail Red’s highly-anticipated upcoming zombie thriller film Block Z, netizens couldn’t help but feel all sorts of excitement over the Star Cinema-produced project.
Red, who is eyeing a 2019 release, gave fans a glimpse of Ina Raymundo’s fate (or at least the true nature of her character) through the first three stills from the film and some gory images of zombies in action.
Julia Barretto, McCoy de Leon, and Maris Racal, who play medical students in the film, can be seen wearing their blue scrubs. Meanwhile, Joshua Garcia, said to play the role of a basketball player, is wearing a casual outfit.
“Block Z. First look,” Julia wrote. To which Mikhail Red replied: “and we’re just getting started.”

Block Z follows the story of a group of students who must help each other to survive a viral outbreak at a quarantined university.
In an interview with the press back in August last year, Mikhail Red shared his hopes “to diversify the genre cinema in the Philippines” through Block Z.
“I think ‘yun ‘yung exciting kasi it’s one of the first full-scale zombie [movies] na locally produced. So ang exciting na nag-partner ang Star Cinema with us to make this film. And at the same time, challenging kasi nga wala kaming baseline for this,” he said.
Mikhail Red, popularly known as the filmmaker behind the critically-acclaimed film Birdshot, has more exciting films up his sleeve including the Bea Alonzo and Charo Santos-starrer horror film Eerie which opens in cinemas this March 27.
Also starring Yves Flores, Ian Veneracion, and Dimples Romana, no specific release date has been announced yet for Block Z.
