Piolo Pascual explains how he and Joyce Bernal came up to the concept of medicinal marijuana for a film.
Two of the Spring Films founders, Piolo Pascual and Joyce Bernal, expressed how proud they were of their first movie offering for the year 2019, Kuya Wes. After being selected and receiving a Best Actress Award for Ina Raymundo in a film festival in Portugal last week, Kuya Wes opened in local cinemas yesterday, March 13.
"Nakakatuwa kasi first time ni Kuya Ogie (Alcasid) na mapasama sa (film) festival na 'yon, first time namin makasali, and na-awardan pa si Ina (Raymundo)," Piolo told PUSH at the Kuya Wes premiere night.
With the current situation of the Filipino films being pulled out early in local cinemas, Piolo admitted having worries about Kuya Wes competing with foreign films. "Siyempre, I mean it's business. At the end of the day, we want to make business and kapag malaki ang kalaban mo, mahirap, mahirap tumapat.
"So we're just really relying on word of mouth, consciousness of people who want to watch the film. And you keep giving them ng magagandang pelikula, para lumabas sila ng bahay at panuorin o piliing panuorin ang Tagalog," Piolo said.
Joyce Bernal also called on moviegoers to Filipino films a chance, like Ulan, Kuya Wes, and Neomanila.
"Ang gusto naman namin talaga is, yung mga pelikula tulad ng Ulan, Kuya Wes, atsaka Neomanila, kayang makipagsabayan... So bigyan lang nila ng chance na unahin 'to. Tatlo yun e, ano ba naman yung isa muna.
"Tsaka inayos namin yung mga pelikula para sumabay kami sa standards ng Hollywood," the director said in a separate interview.
Meanwhile, the two founders also gave details about their upcoming film about medical marijuana, Post Angst. According to Piolo, who will be one of the cast members, the movie will be shot in Amsterdam.
When asked if how they came up with such a sensitive topic for a film, Piolo said, "I guess because it's socially relevant, so people want to talk about it. So it piqued our interest so we go from there."
Bb. Joyce also explained, "Parang gusto namin na i-discuss among us, kung ano 'yon, lalo na sa mga taong kapos sa pera, katulad namin, na sana maintindihan nila ito, na may ganitong alternatibo. Parang ishe-share mo lang ng ganun.
"And 'yung gusto namin kasi sa pelikulang iyon, global din yung standards niya, so 'yun din 'yung tina-target namin, hindi ba, mayroong awareness naman globally ng medical marijuana," the director added.
With the tagline from its teaser poster that reads "Starring the only brave actors of the Philippine Cinema," Post Angst will be directed by Marcus Adoro, the former lead guitarist of iconic rock band, The Eraserheads.
