The release of Ulan’s official trailer early in February has caused quite a buzz online for its shockingly supernatural elements – tikbalangs, Humpty Dumpty-like characters, and other mythical creatures took center stage, leading fans to come into the conclusion that the movie is leaning towards horror and mystery rather than a love story.

But this isn’t the case for filmmaker Irene Villamor and Viva Film production’s newest collaboration – or, at least, according to its leading star, actress Nadine Lustre, who clarified that Ulan, contrary to fan theories, has not a streak of horror.

“Wala siyang bahid ng horror, which is surprising for a lot of people. Ang iniisip talaga nila because may tikbalang, horror or thriller. It’s actually romance. It’s a love story. It’s about finding yourself,” she said in a report by ABS-CBN News.

Her leading man, actor Carlo Aquino, explained that Ulan is simply about Maya’s – played in the film by Nadine – fascination with the rain.

“Na-fuel pa 'yun dahil sa mga kuwento ng lola niya tungkol sa mga tikbalang. Kapag kinakasal daw sila, umuulan tapos pinagbabawalan silang umibig. Habang lumalaki siya, nagkakaroon ng iba’t ibang kahulugan ng pagbuhos ng ulan,” he said.

Like most of her previous roles, Nadine said that there is a part of her in her newest character – for one, Maya’s journey to self-love throughout the film is akin to her own experience of having to find herself.

“Parang 'yung naging journey kasi ni Maya dito is also my journey to self-love. Until now naman, nandoon pa rin ako sa phase na iyon,” she said.

“I guess 'yung part kasi na si Maya mahilig siyang umasa tapos kapag na-disappoint siya, sobrang disappointed siya na hindi na siya maka-move on. Before I used to be like that, but eventually I learned to accept na lang and tell myself na lang na maybe it’s not for you. Maybe there’s something better coming,” she added.

As her first time to part ways with longtime on-screen partner and real-life boyfriend James Reid, Nadine said that working with Carlo for Ulan had gone surprisingly smooth, as with her experience with the rest of the cast.

On the other hand, Carlo, who plays a volunteer for a non-government organization in the film, said that it had been fun working with Nadine, adding that she is “very professional” when it comes to her craft.

“Masarap [katrabaho si Nadine]. May mga parehas kaming gusto sa music. Kapag kasama ko nga siya sa set, parang siya na si Maya, eh. Very professional,” he said.

Aside from the Nadine, Carlo, and Marco, Ulan will feature AJ Muhlach and child star Elia Ilano, and is set to premiere on March 13 in cinemas nationwide.
