Journalist Karen Davila thanked athlete-cum-politician Manny Pacquiao for “setting the record straight” with regards to their controversial one-on-one interview on ANC’s Headstart last Tuesday.
DOES Sen @mannypacquiao agree with proposals (under proposed Federalism) requiring a college degree for senators or for those running for higher office? Sen @mannypacquiao agrees & admits to quietly finishing his college degree 🇵🇭 PREZ PLANS for 2022? Pacquiao says, “none yet” & is focused on being campaign manager of PDP Laban touring the country w Mayor @indaysaraduterte 🇵🇭 Are we seeing a future Pres-VP tandem? This comes after the veteran reporter drew flak for her no-holds-barred questioning as she and Manny discussed the recent proposal to require public officials, particularly senators and presidents, a college degree before running for a seat in the legislative, to which the latter said he agrees on.
"Pero kung ganun, baka hindi ka na mag-qualify," said Karen.
"Hindi, nag-aaral naman ako," revealed the Boxing Champ, but refused to go into details.
“Naghahanda naman ako. Ako kasi yung tao na hindi kailangang pagsabihan kundi ginagawa ko yung kailangan kong gawin. Like boxing, boxer ako, champion, but actually hindi lang boxing ang sport ko, basketball, volleyball, chess, billiards. Kumbaga, nilalaro ko lahat,” he added.
On social media, thousands of netizens called out Karen for being “rude” and “condescending” with the way she had interviewed Manny.
The athlete has since defended the journalist, however, citing that he “was never offended by her manner of questioning” in an official statement he released last Friday.
“Isa po siyang batikan sa larangan ng broadcasting. Kung may formal training sa boxing, may formal training din sa education,” he said.
Through a series of tweets last Saturday, Karen explained that she was but only put in an awkward spot, given the context of the whole interview.
Thank you Sen @mannypacquiao for setting the record straight 🙏🏻 I’ve been asked, “bakit mo tinanong kasi si Manny about his college degree?”. To put in context - Manny was invited to the show as the campaign manager of PDP Laban, a party that supports Federalism. (Cont 2) Under the Federal Draft charter is a proposal requiring college degrees for senators & higher office. I asked Manny if he agrees w proposal & was surprised he said, “yes, I agree”. So i asked why... and he revealed that “nag-aaral ako at tinatapos ang college degree ko” pic.twitter.com/oRjtQiqLik— Karen Davila (@iamkarendavila) February 22, 2019
(Cont 3) I have worked in Habitat Phils with Manny. He has been on Headstart 4x & even had a 2 hour breakfast w him after the show. We discussed the university where he is getting his degree among other things. This is why I am grateful Manny set the record straight #ANCHeadstart pic.twitter.com/jtSwDSgTMu— Karen Davila (@iamkarendavila) February 22, 2019
(cont 4) Tanong nyo... Do I agree w the college degree requirement for higher office? Tulad ni former CJ Hilario Davide... NO.
In the end, Karen said that she’s grateful to Manny for addressing the public to “stop the hate” towards her.
