After all the buzz surrounding John Lloyd Cruz's unexpected appearance in Culion was revealed during the launch of the film's teaser trailer, Meryll Soriano said she was happy she got to act alongside Lloydy in what she shares was really more of a special participating role. "From the very beginning, napaka-paramount kasi nung role ni John Lloyd sa character ko. It was a friendly request. Masaya kami na pumayag din siya. It's just one scene. Sobrang ikli lang. Maikli lang po talaga. But sobra siyang essential dun sa character ko na si Ditas. Maiintindihan ng lahat kung bakit ganun yung chatacter niya from the very beginning kasi yun pala yung story. He's somebody from the past ni Ditas na iniwanan niya," she shared during the Culion grand presscon held last December 5 in Quezon City.
Aside from being good friends offcam, Meryll said she was happy to have worked with Lloydy again on an Metro Manila Film Festival project after four years. “It's such a great relief na siya yung gumawa ng eksenang yun because I miss him. Kasama ko siya sa Honor Thy Father, kaibigan ko siya. So napaka-importante sa akin as an actor na yung makakasama ko dun in that short scene is someone that I trust and I love. So nasiyahan ako na pumayag siya," she said.
After Lloydy's statement regarding his short appearance in Culion, Meryll admitted that regardless of what happened, she wants to smooth things over between the multi-awarded actor and her film. "We have to respect how he feels. Hindi natin alam kung ano usapan nila but we have to respect how he feels kung yun ang nararamdaman niya and siguro on behalf of the whole production and the whole film I would like to apologize kung nasaktan siya doon sa nangyari and hindi yun intentional. Talagang excited lang lahat na ipakita na kasama siya sa film di ba? Siguro nagkaroon lang ng miscommunication. Nag reach out (ako) pero hindi ganun ang mga pinag-usapan, yung chikahan namin kung kailan siya uuwi, like going back to being friends. Pero you know hindi namin napag-usapan ito kasi work din siya eh. Kasi wala siya ngayon, kasi it's a personal sensitive topic na hindi ko pa rin naiintindihan because hindi pa kami nakakapag-usap about it and I really don't have any powers to say anything kasi wala pa akong firsthand information about it," she explained.
The Culion actress said media may have been quick to assume that Lloydy's role was bigger than what was shown in the teaser trailer. "People jump into conclusions nowadays so quickly. Na hindi pa nga nila alam kung ano yung real situation with the real people involved, and then parang chismis yan eh, ibubulong mo sa isa tapos maiiba ng maiiba. And that's how it is, we have to accept that. I would course love to get a chance to talk to him about this but maybe in time. Kasi nga ngayon busy siya, busy rin ako," she said.
As one of the people who was pivotal in getting Lloydy to accept the role, Meryll said there is no guilt to be had ever after the initial brouhaha about his participation. And even though she has yet to talk to him in person, Meryll said that thankfully her friendship with the talented actor has not been affected in any way. "Wala naman kaming problema. Kasi nag-chi-chikahan kami kailan bibisita. Meron kaming mga projects na iniisip na gawin. So okay kami definitely. I don't think I should feel guilty. It was a request. He granted it. I mean everybody was excited to work with him. So bakit ako ma-gi-guilty? Personal yun sa akin na siya ang naka-eksena ko. And I'm lucky na siya talaga yung naka-eksena ko. Between us na lang siguro yun bilang magkaibigan. Hindi na yun dapat ilabas kung ano man yun. Kasi siyempre gusto ko rin ma-hear yung side niya pero amin na lang siguro yun," she added.
