“It’s a very sad reality,” Catriona Gray said about the racist slurs against new Miss Universe title holder Zozibini Tunzi.
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona was shocked and saddened after hearing that her successor, the new Miss Universe titleholder Zozibini Tunzi, received racist jokes online after the competition.
In an interview with the press, PUSH asked Catriona about her reaction to the offensive jokes that surfaced online.
"I think it's a very sad reality that there continues to be so much criticism and detracting comments online," she said while seemingly surprised about the news.
The beauty-queen-turned-book-author then recalled her own experiences online after being crowned last year.
"Even ako I receive my fair share of bashing and criticism during my year, during my competition, and it's something that we as people should really question like what are our values," she said.
After crowning as the new Miss Universe last December 8, Zozibini became a subject of inappropriate jokes online targetting her skin color.
Catriona also shared her opinion about the unhealthy bashing culture online that most of the personalities are experiencing right now. "It's always turning it to almost the victim mentality; how should we deal with the bashing, but we should tell the people saying that 'Don't say that in the first place'.
"It shouldn't be the victim having to do the action. It should be a question of building up our values to know that that's not acceptable," she explained.
Being an advocate for children's welfare and education, Catriona said that she has confidence in Zozibini, whose answer in the Q and A portion promotes teaching leadership to young girls.
"I know that regardless of the comments that she received, Zozibini will be an amazing Miss Universe and she will carry the brand very very well," she said.
