Multi-awarded director Brillante Mendoza shares how he prepared Judy Ann Santos for the role of a Muslim mother.
Apart from his upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry Mindanao, director Brillante Mendoza said he’s already got a slew of exciting new projects slated for release next year including the film Bangsamoro which stars Piolo Pascual, Rocco Nacino, Baron Geisler, Cesar Montano, and Marvin Agustin. The multi-awarded director recently held a special media screening for Mindanao held last December 9 at The Podium mall in Ortigas.
Before the press screening, Brillante said that he had a smooth working relationship with his lead star and even compared her acting skills with the country’s superstar Nora Aunor. “Ang maganda sa kanya, nakikinig siya. Madali siyang turuan kasi hindi na siya kailangan i-direct kasi sobrang galing niya. Kailangan lang talaga na i-guide siya kasi ang maganda sa kanya, parang si Ate Guy (Aunor) din noh, umaarte nasa puso. Mas niraramdam nila yung character nila kesa dun sa performance,” he shared.
Brillante said that he made Juday was well-informed before her first day on the set. “Binigyan ko siya ng assignment. Pinapanuod ko sa kanya yung mga films ko, may mga pinapanuod ako sa kanyang mga videos, may mga binigay sa kanyang mga leaflets at saka mga information about Mindanao, about Maguindanao, about yung character niya as Saima and yung research namin pinakita ko sa kanya. So well informed siya,” he said.
In press interviews, Juday revealed that she enjoyed working with her Mindanao director because of his quiet and peaceful working style on the set. “Well kasi hindi naman kailangan sumigaw sa set para marinig ka. Basta’s mag-usap lang kayo. I think for as long as nandun lang yung respeto makikinig naman yung mga tao,” he added.
