‘Parasite’ becomes first South Korean film to enter Golden Globe nominations

Acclaimed film Parasite continues to make history as it becomes the first-ever South Korean film to enter the final list of Golden Globe nominees.

On Monday, December 9, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the list of nominees for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

Parasite bagged three nominations including Best Director (Bong Joon-ho), Best Screenplay (Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won), and Best Motion Picture for the Foreign Language category.

Joon-ho will compete against Todd Phillips of Joker, Martin Scorsese of The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Sam Mendes of 1917 for the Best Director.

Parasite will vie against Marriage Story written and directed by Noah Baumbach, The Two Popes written by Anthony McCarten, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the Best Screenplay category.

Lastly, Bong Joon-ho is set to compete against The Farewell by Lulu Wang, Pain and Glory by Pedro Almodovar, Les Miserables by Ladj Ly and Portrait of a Lady on Fire by Celine Sciamm for the Best Foreign Language Film.

The black comedy thriller, which revolves around two families of different classes who encounter a series of troubling incidents after crossing each other's paths, won the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival 2019.

It stars Cho Yeo-jeong, Park So-dam, Choi Woo-shik, and Kang Ho-song, among others.

Parasite, which already racked up $123.4 million since its release last May, currently holds a 99% rating in review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, the 77th Golden Globe Awards is happening on January 5, 2020 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
