Veteran actor Tony Mabesa passed away yesterday, October 4. He was 84.
Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas and playwright Floy Quintos shared the family’s statement online and confirmed that the actor was “surrounded by family and friends” when he died.
“We, the family of Antonio Mabesa, are saddened to announce his passing. Sir Tony joined his creator at 10:20 this evening. He was surrounded by family and friends. Details of the wake will be announced tomorrow. We thank you for your prayers. We hope you can respect the family's wish for privacy at this time,” it read.
Tony was born in Los Baños, Laguna in 1935, and first started his passion for theater when he directed a class play back when he was still in high school. Over the years, with various roles from different plays and films, Tony left a mark and was dubbed as an icon in Philippine theater.
One of his notable films was the 2018 film Rainbow’s Sunset, where he co-starred with the late Eddie Garcia. He received a Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Best Supporting Actor award for his role.
