Award-winning actress Lea Salonga, who plays Mrs. Lovette in the local production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, called out theatergoers who are using their phones during shows anew.
Lea, who has always been stern when it comes to theater etiquette, took to her personal Facebook page to express her dismay following the new incident, which happened during one of her shows.
“And still, despite everything, there were folks using their cellphones during Sweeney Todd. I hope the earth opens up and swallows you whole, you entitled, moronic c***s,” she wrote.
Lea also gave a fair warning to those who plan to watch one of Sweeney Todd’s remaining shows in the next few weeks.
“If you can’t stay off your phone for a few hours, do us all a favor and don’t come to the theater. Not only are you a distraction to the actors, but you’re also a nuisance to the other patrons sitting around you that actually want to be there. If you’re only going to show off that you can afford it, but don’t actually possess the manners, keep your arse at home,” she wrote.
According to Lea, she and the rest of the team behind Sweeney Todd reminded everyone about the rule twice to make sure that such events don't happen once the show starts.
“We’ve been trying so hard with the cellphone advisories on social media and in the theater. And even with our own unique take that happens just before the orchestral downbeat. Our ushers are also working hard, telling you twice to put your phone away. TWICE! But you’re just either too dense or entitled to think that it applies to you, it seems,” she added.
Meanwhile, the The Voice PH coach also lamented another incident where she got distracted after she heard a child in the audience crying.
She said: “Okay, because I need to know... from the stage we could hear what seemed like a small child in the house. Was it? If... IF... if that is the case, hay ano ba?”
Sweeney Todd is a co-production of Atlantis Theatrical and ABS-CBN Events.
The show runs until October 27 at The Theatre at Solaire.
