The Itchyworms will perform with Ely Buendia for a special one-night only concert next month.
Having grown up listening to Eraserheads songs in the ‘90s, Jugs Jugueta said it was a dream come true working with singer-songwriter Ely Buendia for a major concert. “The Eraserheads really inspired me to write my own songs. They inspired us to write our own songs and to form our own bands. We’re very excited for the collaboration kasi bata pa lang kami, idol na namin si Ely. Totoo, literal. Nung high school ako, kaya ko nakilala si Julie yung manager namin, kasi she was the original ‘Julie Tearjerky’ (an Eraserheads song). Siya yung road manager ng Eraserheads. So lahat kami nanunuod kami ng mga gigs ng E-heads dati. So dati pa lang kabisado na namin yung mga kanta nila and ngayon dream come true na itutugtog namin yung mga kantang yun with him, the wrote the person who wrote the songs,” he shared during the Ely Buendia & The Itchyworms: The Greatest Hits concert presscon last January 15 at Resorts World Manila.
Jugs was the one who instigated the collaboration by approaching the Eraserheads singer and asking if had any unfinished songs which led to the Itchyworms doing music videos with him for songs like “Pariwara,” and “Lutang” and a collaboration of six songs. He never imagined it would lead to a concert with Ely to start off 2019. “When we first started this, dapat nga isang kanta lang eh. So hindi namin na-imagine na magkakaroon ng isa pang kanta at isa pang gig, at isa pang malaking concert. So bahala na (laughs). Actually the offer to do the show here at Resorts World, parang it fell into our laps. We had seen the play Ang Huling El Bimbo and we know how the venue looks. And for any musician. it’s always also a treat to play at a very large and at the same time, good sounding venue like the Newport Performing Arts Theater. So parang hindi naman kami mag-no-no sa ganung offer. That’s the way it happened kind of,” he shared.
Jugs said that his favorite Eraserheads song is a lesser known one called “Light Years.” “It’s not the most popular song of the Eheads but I love it,” he said.
The Ely Buendia & The Itchyworms: The Greatest Hits concert is happening on February 9, Saturday at 8 pm, at the Newport Performing Arts theater in Pasay City. “This is our first major full-length concert with Ely. It will have our greatest hits as well as some Beatles covers and a few original songs,” he said
