Catriona Gray sets the record straight about her identity.
"I am Miss Philippines."
This is how Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray described herself after she was asked to address the claims of some Australians that she is "Miss Australia." The beauty queen was born and raised in Cairns, Queensland and later moved to the Philippines when she was a teenager.
In an interview with the US show Build Series, Catriona clarified that she identifies herself as "Miss Philippines."
She remarked, "I really feel like I’m a Miss Philippines. I feel like a Filipina, a Filipino woman. It just so happens that when I was growing up, I was very much of an Australian. And I think you can be both because I did grow up with those two sides of the world. I just thought it was funny that there was this war, like, ‘no, she’s ours, she’s practically a Miss Australia.’ But I am a Miss Philippines."
Nonetheless, Catriona doesn't mind that Australia is being ecstatic too about her victory. "I can’t blame them for being excited, from really feeling the high spirits of the season, too. So we’ll let them have that.”
Catriona is currently in New York City, her official residence as Miss Universe. The beauty queen just kicked off her media interviews in the US this week, appearing on several TV shows in America.
