Speaking on Tonight with Boy Abunda, ‘Queen of Soul’ Jaya (Maria Luisa Ramsey Kagahastian-Gotidoc) shared how she feels about being called out by netizens on her performance as the ‘Terror Hurado’ on It’s Showtime’s Tawag ng Tanghalan.

“You cannot please everyone, I’ve been singing for more than 30 years. I’m deaf in my right ear, about 30-40% muffled yung right ear ko, hindi yan dahilan para hindi ko  itama ang mali kasi ang sinasabi nila is an opinion, and I have to respect that. At the same time, I respect more the opinions of those who know how to sing. Lagi naman ako nakakatanggap ng advice, tips, and criticisms from the pros and I do take it because I need those to grow. Hindi ako na he-hurt dahil sinabi nila yan because at the end of the day most of these people probably have never seen me perform. Some of them are super young, hindi na nila ako kilala.”

The mother of three also gave a glimpse of what happens backstage of Tawag ng Tanghalan. “Ang Tawag ng Tanghalan ay hindi biro, mahirap syang tungtungan, the only reason they get ‘gong-ed (voted off of the stage)’ is because we have rules, kapag tatlo, apat, limang mistakes na, pwuede na. It’s our prerogative and there are (other) people there who also make decisions. Pag ako nang-gong, gusto ko rin malaman niya (the contestant) kung bakit, hindi yan katapusan ng career mo, it’s just that the performance for the day has not been that good. Lahat ng mga sumasali sa Tawag ng Tanghalan, ang respeto ko at pagmamahal namin bilang mga hurado, nandun para sa kanila.”

Multi-platinum recording artist Jaya will be performing in SoulJa, an R&B royalty concert with Jay-R and Jason Dy at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila, on August 30, 2018.
