Gary Valenciano’s illness was discovered after he underwent a heart operation last May.
Gary Valenciano recounts how he found out he had kidney cancer in an interview with Korina Sanchez for Rated K. The singer, who surprised the nation by announcing he had a heart operation, once again shocked his followers when a teaser for the interview revealed he has another serious illness.
Right after he had his open heart surgery, Gary said he felt lower back pain which doctors initially diagnosed as "simply muscular." However, a diagnostic exam revealed a more severe problem in the other side of his body. It showed he had a six-centimeter malignant tumor attached to his kidney.
Gary needed to go surgery again. Fortunately, the doctors discovered that that the tumor was confined and extractable, which means that it would not spread to the other parts of the body and could be removed by cutting off a part of his kidney. Gary did not need to undergo chemotherapy and radiation anymore, and is now cancer-free.
"Doctors were again baffled I was healing so well after my open heart surgery, despite my diabetes. They say I have the heart of a strong 25-year-old. And when they saw the tumor in my kidney and were able to take it all out without any need for chemo? Well, we all agree: this is the work of the Lord, and nothing else. I am blessed," he explained.
