KC Concepcion opened up about the pressures of being in showbiz. “Sa ating mga nasa showbiz, when you’re doing teleserye work, movie work, wala ka ng time para mag-relax. And when, in your personal life things happen, it’s harder to cope when you’re pushing your body too hard,” shared KC. “Kapag artista, parang ang expectation wala kang problema. Minsan masama yung pakiramdam mo or hindi ka naka-smile, may masasabi agad. Expectations are really leveled up.”
When juggling so many commitments and expectations, being true to one’s self can be a real struggle. “Malo-lost ka talaga kapag hindi mo kilala ‘yung sarili mo and then pumasok ka sa ganitong industry. Sobrang saya, pero sobrang gulo din. To think dito na ako pinanganak, and yet may mga panahon talagang parang hindi ko na kilala ‘yung sarili ko,” revealed KC.
Criticisms are part and parcel of her chosen career. Through time, KC has learned how to cope with them. “Hindi ‘yun mawawala, but I think hindi mo pwedeng dibdibin masyado. I’ve learned to filter. It’s good to listen doon sa may point, lalo na kung ‘yung mga may mahal sa ‘yo ‘yung nagsasabi sa ’yo. Pero ‘yung mga hindi mo naman kilala na actually wala naman talagang care sa ’yo, it’s not worth it na ma-stress sa mga iniisip nila.
“It’s just important to really have faith in God, know who you are sa family mo, sino ba talaga yung mga taong importante sa ’yo at talagang mahal ka, sikat ka man o hindi, may pera o wala, maganda o hindi. These are the people na mahal ka for who you are,” KC shared.
At the recent Shopee event held at the ballroom of Okada Manila, KC joined Miss World 2013 Megan Young in empowering women to be happy with who they are. Loving one’s self is not an impossible feat. “It’s not hard when you’re honest with yourself,” said KC. “Kapag honest ka sa sarili mo, and alam mo yung kahinaan mo, and you know what your strengths are — which is what I’ve been doing to myself — it’s not as hard to love yourself. But you have to like yourself first. If you don’t like yourself, then you can’t love yourself. And when you don’t love yourself, hindi din maayos ‘yung pakikitungo mo sa ibang tao.”
KC also took the opportunity to raise awareness about mental health. “And daming lumalabas about mental health, about depression. I really want to share with people na hindi ninyo pwedeng pagtawanan ‘yung mga may pinagdadaanan. Hindi talaga siya biro. ‘Yung mga taong ‘yun, they’re not cowards kaya nila nagagawang tapusin na ‘yung life nila. Hindi din nila gusto ‘yung sitwasyon nila e. And I know that because may mga mahal ako sa buhay na may pinagdadaanan na ganon. It’s a serious thing, na kung kayo man pagdaanan niyo ‘yun, hindi din kayo matutuwa na may natatawa dahil malungkot kayo.”
Instead of putting people down, the best thing to do is to be there for them. “First of all, don’t judge. Hindi talaga natin alam ‘yung tunay na tumatakbo sa isip nila para makarating dun. Learn more about what they’re going through. Make them smile in your own way, in little ways.” KC asked people to be more understanding, of ourselves and of others. “Lahat tayo may pinagdadaanan. Each person has a story, a story that you may not know about.”
