EXCLUSIVE: Richard Somes shares story behind his new film “El Peste”

Proud to finally be part of this year’s selection of Sinag Maynila film festival for his film El Peste, director Richard Somes said it was important for his films to join these kinds of events.

“I was called up by (Sinag Maynila festival director) Brillante Mendoza trying to invite me and I said yes kaagad kasi siyempre it’s nice to be part of the growth ng lahat ng festivals here sa Pilipinas and I think it’s a two-way thing din na they are supporting you and you are supporting them. Siyempre it’s an avenue also to showcase yung trabaho mo na wala kang kailangang pressure,” he shared.

The talented director also said that El Peste, which stars Mon Confiado as a man who works for a pest control company and falls for a married woman, is a project that is very special to him.

“Number one it’s very close to my heart talaga kasi isa ito sa mga passion projects ko. Kasi during those times nung ginawa ko ito, nasa moment din ako sa sarili ko on what to do kasi wala pang ginagawa eh. So all of a sudden I just wrote a script for my workshop and then the script for El Peste came out. Although the story has alread been there mga 10 years ago pa,” he revealed.

With the help of his workshop students, Somes said he was able to finally bring to life the story of Abner.

“With a limited budget ginawa namin and I called up friends to help with it. Me and the students found it interesting naman kasi my signature style nandun pa rin. It’s gritty, it’s dark, medyo macabre so medyo na-excite yung mga students. And then it’s a long process so as we went along we worked with the script and the scenes. That’s one of the processes na na-enjoy ko the most kasi I felt na if you’re doing something that’s very personal to you, dapat siyempre you’re just enjoying it instead of having a deadline in mind na meron kang dilemma palagi if you’re doing to finish it in time,” he explained.

The writer and director shared that all his actors were handpicked for their roles and cast members Mon Confiado and Alvin Anson even collaborated with him during the whole shooting process.

“Ang style ko naman kasi palagi wala ako script na intact. So yung pagka-organic niya na process I think yun ang na-miss ko. Which sa ngayon while I’m doing some other projects din ulit, I’ll try to make sure na hindi ko mawala yung ganung process. Kasi siyempre you’re dealing with yung passion mo rin and yung gusto mo gawin so why not enjoy it na lang?” he added.

The 2018 Sinag Maynila Film Festival will run from March 7 to 15 in select SM Cinemas within Metro Manila— SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Fairview, SM Southmall, SM Bacoor, SM Manila, and SM Sta. Mesa.
