From her early days as an Ang TV kid up to her last soap Pangako Sa ‘Yo in 2016, actress Jan Marini Alano said she has always kept a low profile. The 39-year-old actress said that she has always been committed to her husband Gerard Pizzaras and their two children. “I’ve always been busy with family since the day I got married. I committed na I will be a hands-on wife and mother. So kahit na nag-so-soap opera ako or may trabaho, yung family ko always come first. So after Pangako Sa ‘Yo I decided to cut down on work kasi my kids are growing up and I decided to homeschool them,” she told PUSH during the Skechers Sandals spa party event held last March 21 in Quezon City.
For the past two years, Jan Marini said she has been busy home schooling her kids Rian and Rain under the Homeschool Global program. “It was a family decision of course kasi hindi naman puwedeng ako lang may gusto tapos yung kids ayaw? I really had to bring them with me to the home school seminar so the were free to decide for themselves. 2004 pa lang I really wanted to home school na kasi I read this book na yung author homeschooled siya and he was able to write a bestselling novel at age 15. So parang gusto yung idea. Then I researched about it. Pero everything happened in God’s perfect time kasi nung nag-decide ako kakatapos lang rin ng Pangako Sa ‘Yo remake and then pumayag yung asawa ko and the kids are growing up. Andun sila sa age na parang yung learning gusto ko ma-assure yung sarili ko at yung anak ko rin that they are really learning what they’re supposed to learn,” she explained.
Even with her teaching duties, Jan Marini said she has not totally turned her back on showbiz. “Third year na namin itong next school year and also I still do acting jobs, I still sing. Pero ang na-realize ko, if you really put your priorities in order and klaro sa yo kung ano yung priorities, hindi naman siya mahirap i-manage. In fact nagpaalam ako sa asawa ko, kasi of course it’s a financial concern din na hindi ako magiging kasing busy as before. So I really had to ask him kung okay lang na I will not be doing regular TV drama kasi yun talaga ang kumakain ng time mo. And if ever I will, napapakiusapan naman na hindi ganun ka-sagad yung working hours,” she said.
With her eldest daughter Rian entering senior high this year, Jan Marini said she is satisfied with the results of home schooling. “Super laki kasi yung retention ng learning siguro I would say na parang eight out of ten na-re-retain. I don’t blame the school system ha. It’s just that my kids they really thrived in a home school set up. Yun yung kind of learning nila. Sabi ko nga during the first year pag hindi nag-excel, ibalik ko sa traditional school. Pero nag-excel and they’re more confident now. Ang kini-question lagi sa akin kung paano yung social life? They have better social life now compared to when they were in school,” she said.
The Skechers Sandals celebrity guest said she also tries to expose her kids to as many different people outside their home. “Kasi they get to mingle with different kinds of people. Sinasama ko wherever I go. Ini-expose ko lang sila and kung meron akong kailangan barilin na let’s say na-expose sila to something that wouldn’t help them and then immediate yung correction eh. Hindi gaya kapag nasa school na hindi mo alam yung nangyayari eh at na-le-learn nila from classmates,” she added.
