Radio DJ Papa Jack-son also reveals the secret to how he stays on top of his game.
During a recent cooking event with Eden, PUSH got to chat with popular late night radio personality “Papa Jack-son” (whose real name is John Gemperle) to talk about what people probably don’t know about him when he’s not dishing out advice to his callers every weeknight.
1. He still gets intimidated by people and their questions.
Even after a decade or so of talking to random callers who ask for his advice, Papa Jack-son said it’s still not uncommon for him to feel intimidated by some of the questions they ask him about. “Yes, lagi yan. Hindi kung sino ang kausap ko kasi I get to talk to doctors, lawyers, may tumatawag eh. And it makes you feel okay na may tumatawag na mga doktor, abogado, hindi dahil sa special sila pero for people like them to call the show makes you feel better. Mas na-i-intimidate ako pag it’s about matters of life-and-death and it has to do with parents. Pag magulang yung usapan, it’s very intimidating to me. Kasi pag love life, at some point meron kang wiggle room para biruin. Pero pag tungkol sa family especially para sa parents, sobrang strict ako diyan,” he said.
2. He loves collecting knowledge
“Wala namang on-the-spot research before each show but I guess but I really love the topic of Sociology. Siguro I understand more of sa social structure natin than other people giving advice and dun ako kumukuha ng aking hugot at payo. Ang philiosophy ko sa buhay is to learn at least something new every day. Kailangan may isang bago, whether name ng dating presidente or senator, bagong software na kailangan aralin, I learned how to design this day, nalaman ko yung gamit ng ganitong power tool, ang importante is I learn something new every single day. Basta something new. I don’t care kung makalimutan ko siya bukas basta I don’t shut my eyes at night ng wala akong bagong natutunan.”
3. He prefers to do radio over television
“Nagka-show na ako tatlong beses. But I don’t think effective pa ako sa TV na ang pinag-uusapan ko ay love life pa rin. I think I can do something else. I think travel siguro or maybe I can talk about big bikes, cars since interest ko rin. Kasi yung usapang emosyon, it does wonders pag audio lang siya eh. It leaves the imagination to the listeners. Pero pagka-TV kasi, nagiging showbiz masyado, nagiging glamorized eh. So parang hindi ko siya kaya gawin on-cam.”
4. He is a proud vegetarian
“Siguro dalawang taon na akong vegetarian. Unang una nagtanggal ako ng kanin 13 years ago. Tapos six years ago nagtanggal ako ng land-based animals. A couple of years ago nagtanggal ako ng all animals. Unang una for healthy living pero primarily for animal rights. Naaawa ako sa kanila. I have five dogs. So feeling ko yung mga dogs may barkada rin yan ba’t mo papatayin. Pamilya sila. Motivation ko sa akin yun. Pero sa bahay ko, I allow yung mga housemates ko to eat whatever they want. I do not impose on them yun.”
5. Some people think he’s gay
“I don’t know if people know na na-issue na akong bading. Hindi naman totoo yun kahit kailan (laughs). I don’t know if there’s anything that can surprise yung mga nakikinig pa sa akin. Wala naman kasi whatever I do the entire day, I say it on air.”
6. He doesn’t consider himself a successful businessman
“Kahapon muntik masunog yung salon ko sa Makati. Nasunog yung katabi. Naisip ko siguro a little too late for me na mag-business kasi dapat noon ko na ginawa pero natututunan ko na rin ang negosyo. I think it’s good that I want to be my own boss someday.”
7. He has no big secret to his successful career
“Wala naman. There’s no secret to what I do. Ang sikreto ay walang sikreto. Totoong tao lang. Real talk lang lahat. I think bago pa sumikat yung term na real talk sa Pinas, ginagawa ko na siya for the longest time. Walang pigil. There are a few times na you self edit on the spot pero most of the time real talk real talk lang talaga.”
8. He wants everyone to dream big
“Sa mga estudyante mag-aral mabuti yan ang lagi kong sinasabi. Pag nangarap ka, mangarap ka ng mataas, malayo. Dream of the highest and the furthest star. So kapusin ka man, you might land on the moon, malayo rin. And never be contented with success. Dapat lagi kang hungry.”
