Umeksena at pinag-usapan ang national costume ni 2018 Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray sa naganap na pagrampa ng mga kandidate na ginanap saThailand.

LUZVIMINDA: "Magdiwang. Lumaban. Pagyamanin." 🇵🇭✨ LUZON-- MAGDIWANG" (Celebrate): The island group of LUZON is represented by the world-renowned "PAROL/CHRISTMAS LANTERN" from the province of Pampanga with a BRASS BORDER designed and made in Apalit, Pampanga (inspired by designs from the Philippine Baroque Churches that were declared as UNESCO Heritage Sites) At the back of the PAROL is a PAINTING with INSCRIPTION of the lyrics from "LUPANG HINIRANG", the Philippines’ National Anthem written in Baybayin (Ancient Filipino Alphabet) that literally translates to: "Lupang hinirang, Duyan ka ng magiting, Sa manlulupig Di ka pasisiil. Sa dagat at bundok, Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw." The PAINTING also highlighted victories, festivals, events, heroes and national icons with a style inspired by the works of Philippine National Artist Carlos "Botong" Francisco, a native of the Art Capital of the Philippines, Angono, Rizal in Luzon. VISAYAS--LUMABAN" (Fight): The island group of VISAYAS is represented by a body suit with authentic "tattoo designs" embellished with crystals derived from patterns used by the "PINTADOS" who are indigenous peoples found in various islands in this part of the Philippines. The tattoo patterns are authentic and based from the manusript "BOXER CODEX" written in 1590. The tattoos represent an individual’s journey and a public testimony recounting acts of combat, bravery, and strength, that perfectly represents the courageous and resilient Filipino spirit amidst trials we face in this day and age. MINDANAO-- “PAGYAMANIN" (Enrich): The island group of MINDANAO is represented by an authentic "HEADPIECE & BRASS ACCESSORIES" from the province of South Cotabato and customized KNEE-HIGH BOOTS with embroidered designs inspired by different indigenous textile patterns from the southern part of the Philippines, namely: Inaul, Yakan, Maranao, B'laan, Bagobo, Tausug and T'nalak. The woven textiles express a strong belief in "ancestral and natural spirits" and "cultural roots" of indigenous communities that remain well-preserved up to this day. Pilipinas, para sa iyo ang lahat ng ito. 🇵🇭 @missuniverse 🎥 @benjaminaskinas

So this was not what I was expecting! 🤭 Let me get that out of the way. Up at until the last minute, I thought dear Catriona was was going to show up on stage with a thatched house on her back 🤪🤷🏻‍♂️. I must say my heart broke a little, as I watched her endure the technical difficulty of dragging the lantern through a wheeled contraption. She was clearly struggling, which she later explained that it was due to the carpet’s friction, when they had only tested it on a flat surface. That certainly put a damper on the initial impression. What certainly won me over was the exuberance and positivity that emanated from her despite the glitch. It was endearing. Especially knowing the whole lantern was supposed to light up but didn’t, I can appreciate her unflappability even more. So now, the critique. I love the history and explanation and heart that went into this. But as with every form of art, you sometimes have to see it for what it is at face value. Did it have the intended effect? Did it wow audiences who did not know the back story? Perhaps not. I think the most stunning parts of this have nothing to with the scale and intended grandeur of the lanterns. Her outfit could have had a gargantuan impact all on its own. The intricate beading, the sheer artistry, the sublime composition of the outfit itself was enough of a wow (I die for those boots and they would wow any runway from Milan to New York!). Had she come out in just that, she would have blown the crowd away with her fierceness! In many ways, the rest of it (despite its intent) became more of a distraction. On stage, the execution looked clunky and heavy handed( that frame should have been adorned). Which is a shame, because this could have been a real breathtaking moment. Still, kudos for a tour-de-force effort, Miss Philippines! . . . . #missphilippines #missuniverse #missuniverso #catrionagray #catriona #beautypageant #nationalcostume #thailand #roadtomissuniverse2018 #missuniverse2018 #missveneuela #misscolombia
