Synonymous to Morisette Amon’s name is her first-ever hit single, Akin Ka Na Lang, a song about unrequited love composed by songwriter Kiko Salazar for Himig Handog back in 2014.

While the song was a sure hit among Filipinos, what Morisette and Kiko didn’t expect was for it to reach people from around the world despite the language barrier. Soon after it was made famous by the 22-year-old singer, many international fans have picked up the track to do their own renditions of the single, whether it be for a singing contest or a YouTube fan cover.

Recently, three of them were invited to perform Akin Ka Na Lang with Morissette on ASAP Natin ‘To. They were Malaysia’s Pasqueleta Paulus, who used the song as her contest piece in the World Championship of Performing Arts, and South Korea’s Kim Bora and United Kingdom’s Sophie Drage, both of whom have learned of the Asia’s Phoenix and her masterpiece only through YouTube.

In an interview with Kiko Salazar, he said that what makes Akin Ka Na Lang relatable not only for Original Pilipino Music (OPM) fans but for every listener is the kind of story it tells.

“Everybody, I guess, nae-experience nila ‘yon na meron kang isang friend tapos eventually, parang nafo-fall tayo kasi extra close kayo. Pero hindi same yung feelings niya towards you,” said the composer, who’s just as flattered as Morisette on the success of the song. “Actually, everytime na may kumakanta, kahit local lang, may kilig na sa ‘kin eh. Tapos may mga nakikita na akong foreigners na [kumakanta]. Ibang level, nakaka-high sa saya.”
