While he already revealed in an interview on Tonight With Boy Abunda that Regine Velasquez-Alcasid was the reason he chose to become a singer, not all people are exactly aware how Jed Madela’s singing career actually started out.
In a media conference held at the Star Music office, Jed shared how the manager of his ultimate idol, the one and only Asia's Songbird, discovered him while he performing at a bar.
"Kasi ang kwento niyan, partner partner ko talaga dito, 'yung Tita ko. So siya 'yung duet partner ko dati nung bata pa ako. So kami 'yung mag-barkada. So one day, usap-usap lang namin nun, wala pa ako sa showbiz, alam mo one day hanapin natin 'yung manager ni Regine. Hanapin natin 'yan para siya ang mag-manage sa'yo. Wala lang kwentuhan lang," he said.
He then continued: "Tapos 'yun nga pumasok ako ng industriya. And then, there was one time na pumunta ako sa isang bar, may binisita akong friend na kumakanta dun. Tapos tinawag ako on stage to jam. So kumanta ako dun. And for some weird coincidence, nu'ng gabing 'yun nandun si Ronnie Henares sa mismong bar na 'yun and he was the entertaining manager of that bar. Naalala ko pa 'yun sa Laguna. Head siya dito, ng lounge. Nagulat ako nilapitan niya ako sabi niya 'I am Ronnie Henares and I just would want to ask you if you have a manager.' Sabi ko nung time na 'yun wala akong manager nung time na 'yun. So sabi ko it's just my Tita who's handling me. So kami nagtitinginan kami ng Tita ko tapos sabi ko 'Naalala mo ba 'yung pinag-usapan natin dati na hahanapin natin si Ronnie?' Hindi na pala namin siya kailangan hanapin. Siya na pala talaga nung gabing 'yun ang dumating dun. So he was my very first manager. Nag co-manage sila ng Tita ko."
He also recalled how Ronnie, his manager, said to him that he would want to make him the “Male Regine.”
"So nag-manage na siya sa akin, he asked for a demo. So pinapakanta na niya ako. Sabi niya narinig niya na 'yung range ko. Sabi niya 'may peg na ako' para sa 'yo. I'm going to make you my 'male Regine' kasi 'di ba during that time, parang wala na, lumabas na si Regine from him. So wala na siyang Regine, gagawin kitang male version ng Regine. So he managed me for good three to four years din. And then laking tulong din. Laking tulong ni Ronnie and nang wife niya na si Ida Henares na they trained me also—how to stand up, how to dress, how to talk, and imaging. Grabe 'yung imaging. So I owe a lot to the Henareses," he stated.
Apparently, Jed got accepted into a company where he applied to become a flight attendant. But fate had other plans for him.
"Kasi originally, nu'ng purpose talaga nang pagpunta ko sa Manila, flight attendant. Magfa-flight attendant talaga ako. 'Yun 'yung pinaka-dream ng family for me—maging isang flight steward. So pagpunta ko dito, nag-apply ako sa isang airline and 'yun natanggap naman pero nag-aantay pa before ako i-cacallback. Nagkaroon ng isang audition, narinig ko sa ASAP. Nakita ako nanood ako sa ASAP dati na may isang audition for a band so sumali ako, nag-audition ako, nakapasok ako. Nakuha ko 'yung spot. And wala, nakalimutan ko na 'yung pagiging flight attendant. Siguro, if hindi ako singer, I would have been a flight attendant," he revealed.
Meanwhile, Jed will have Regine Velasquez-Alcasid as one of his special guests in his upcoming major solo concert in celebration of his 15th year in the industry.
Happening on November 17 at the Araneta Coliseum, Jed and Regine are expected to perform a special medley for their fans.
