Finally, the highly anticipated appearance of our very own Marcelito Pomoy on The Ellen Show has happened as it aired last October 29 in the United States.
Through the help of a translator, Marcelito told Ellen that he initially could not believe that he was being invited to The Ellen Show.
“Actually, hindi ko talaga inexpect. And then one time, may nagmessage po sa akin sa Facebook – EllenTV.com. Hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala. And then dumating sa punto na nag-Skype kami, hindi pa rin ako satisfied. And then one time, dumating sa akin ‘yung ticket going to LA (Los Angeles), Ellen.”
He also shared that he started singing at the age of seven, and learned to switch voice types from tenor to soprano at 18. “Siguro ito lang ‘yung bigay sa’kin ‘nung God so ipinagpatuloy ko na lang,” he said.
Marcelito also opened up about his struggles growing up. Having lived on the streets since he was seven, he said he survived by taking on the job of a “pin boy.” He would then earn P50 daily that he would use to buy food. When nighttime comes, he would sleep on the streets.
Fortunately for Marcelito, he got discovered after he joined and emerged the grand winner of the second season of ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent in 2011.
But before that, the 34-year-old singer admitted that although many have been telling him to join singing contests, he did not believe in his talent. What made him decide, however, was the hope that it might reunite him with his family.
Ellen told Marcelito, “This is beyond amazing. I mean, I saw this video of you and I’m so thrilled you’re here.”
Marcelito then gave a hair-raising performance of the English-Italian song The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli where he sang both the tenor and soprano verses. In the end, the audience gave him a standing ovation and Ellen called him unbelievable.
