Paolo Valenciano reveals he is quitting his band Salamin to direct

After entering the music scene with his rock band Salamin more than 12 years ago, Paolo Valenciano definitely broke out of the mold of being known as Gary Valenciano’s eldest son. The 34-year-old artist also went the solo route and released his own album in 2014 but he now admits those days of performing are now behind him. As the director of Biyaheng Diyes: Mitoy Yonting and The Drayber’s 10th Anniversary concert happening at Resorts World Manila on October 30, Paolo said he has no regrets.

“I think the directing thing is a full time job. I had to choose between either doing this or doing the band thing, obviously I chose this. I feel like I’m more effective in the industry as a director. It opens doors for me to work with all kinds of artists. I get to work with Mitoy (Yonting) and his band. This is I think an opportunity that isn’t available to a lot of other musicians. So I just had to make that decision, thinking of my family also. It pays better too (laughs),” he said.

Paolo said the decision came easy for him after making several sacrifices when he tried juggling both performing and directing shows. He has already directed major concerts by Sharon Cuneta, Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga, and even his dad Gary V.  When asked why he couldn’t juggle two careers, he gave an honest answer. “Hindi ako magaling sa time management. For example, let’s say I’m working on this concert, when I work on a particular show, yun lang yung nasa isip ko. As in I have a hard time getting out of that mold. My career as a singer started to suffer kasi hindi na ako nakaka-memorize ng songs, the quality of my voice was deteriorating kasi siyempre pag nag-sho-show sinisigawan ko lahat ng tao. So it wasn’t a sustainable thing for me to be able to do both,” he said.

Paolo also shared that his mom Angeli Pangilinan is still hoping he would hold back on retiring from singing for good. “My mom has been trying to convince me to do otherwise pero I don’t know, I feel like there are people who can really manage their time. I have difficulty with that,” he added.

Biyaheng Diyes: Mitoy Yonting and The Draybers 10th Anniversary concert is happening on October 30, Tuesday, 8 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. Directed by Paolo Valenciano, The Drayber’s 10th year Anniversary gig is also packed with powerhouse guests like Ms Dulce; Randy Santiago; Nyoy Volante; Tawag ng Tanghalan Champion Noven Belleza and finalist Ato Arman; and Tanya Manalang. Tickets are now available at RWM Box Office and on TicketWorld.
