REVIEW: ‘Double Twisting Double Back’ gives a disturbing insight into the world of Philippine men’s gymnastics

As part of this year’s stellar lineup in the Cinema One Originals film festival, Joseph Abello’s sophomore film Double Twisting Double Back shakes up the roster with its sports-themed backdrop and erotic overtones. The story revolves around former national gymnastics team member Badger who is conflicted about focusing on corporate life or returning to gymnastics to fulfill his dream of competing in the 2020 Olympics.

Tony Labrusca takes on his biggest acting role to date as a deeply troubled but well meaning athlete. Tony plays Badger effortlessly because of his past experience taking gymnastic lessons during his teen years. His co-star Joem Bascon plays an equally complicated role as Badger’s frenemy who makes life almost unbearable at some point in the film. The two actors play off each other so well that the storyline’s constant twists and ultimate revelation all make for one compelling story shown in under two hours. It’s no wonder young writer-director Joseph Abello recently launched the book version of the film.

As the first film in Philippine history to delve into the world of male gymnastics, Double Twisting Double Back does not disappoint as it shows all the nitty gritty, even the unattractive side of what it means to be a full-time athlete. More excitement is added when the audience is given the opportunity to know what it feels like being inside Badger’s head as he tries to wrestles his demons and excel in his lifelong passion.
