EXCLUSIVE: Joem Bascon shares why he won't let girlfriend Crisha Uy watch his movie ‘Double Twisting Double Back’

Joem Bascon said he learned a lot about what goes on in the real lives of male gymnasts in the country because of his 2018 Cinema One Originals film entry Double Twisting Double Back. “Nalaman ko na mali yung paniniwala natin na pang-girls lang ‘to. Pag sinabi mo kasing gymnastics sa atin, ‘Uy babae, uy sexy.’ Tapos pag nagkaroon naman ng guys akala natin gay sila. Straight guys talaga sila na yun talaga yung passion nila. Mahilig talaga sila mag-tumbling, mag-acrobat, magkaroon ng routines. Talagang meron silang disiplina sa mga katawan nila. Para silang boksingero pero mas gusto nila yung ganitong training,” he shared.It was also first time working with co-star Tony Labrusca and director Joseph Abello. “We had a couple of script conferences and meetings, batuhan ng linya. Dun ko si Tony first time na-meet. Si Direk sobrang nakakatuwa yun. It’s my first time working with him. Natutuwa ako kasi iba yung vision niya when it comes to the shots. Natutuwa lang ako na meron palang ganun pa ring director na very passionate. Hindi siya experimental eh. He’s very daring when it comes to his shots, yung parang ang weird,” he shared.In the film which is being described as a sports erotic thriller, Joem said his role might be too much for his longtime girlfriend, vlogger Crisha Uy. “Actually na-explain ko pero sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Huwag mo na panuorin (laughs).’ Hindi ko na siya papapanuorin. There are some things or some works na ginagawa ko na hindi ko na siya pinapapanuod. Pero she understands kasi alam naman niya na very passionate ako when it comes to work. Kumbaga I give all of myself na kapag nagkaroon ako ng proyekto, kung ano man yung iri-require sa akin. Pero andun pa rin yung para kang nakikipag-haggle na, ‘Kailangan mo ba yan? Gagawin mo ba yan?’ Siyempre makikipag-usap ka pa rin,” he explained. With Double Twisting Double Back also touching on serious issues like mental and sexual health as well as the lack of funding for national athletes, Joem said people should not just think of it as being compared to other psychological films like Fight Club and Black Swan. “Hindi naman. Siguro it’s an inspiration for everyone, for the director, the producer. Actually may sinabi pa sila na The Dark Knight Joker type. Siguro yun yung mga napanuod niya that gave him the inspiration to create kung sino man yung mga characters dito para mabigyan lang ng idea kung ano yung gustong buohin. Pero during the shoot kasi parang brinush off na namin lahat nung binigay sa amin na pegs. Ang ginawa namin nag-create na lang kami ng characters,” he said.

With Double Twisting Double Back also touching on serious issues like mental and sexual health as well as the lack of funding for national athletes, Joem said people should not just think of it as being compared to other psychological films like Fight Club and Black Swan. “Hindi naman.
