Fashion designer Francis Libiran shares how celebs like Daniel Padilla choose their red carpet looks

As one of the most popular designers every year at the Star Magic ball, Francis Libiran admitted he trimmed down his clients to less than 10 celebrities for this year’s event. “For the past years I’ve been dressing up a lot of celebrities. Sabi ko talaga this year I would dress up few lang. A few that I have good relationships with like Kisses Delavin. Si Kisses is very youthful, millennial, so talagang para bang working with her and designing something for her is something wherein it’s very special to me. I’ve also been dressing up Xian Lim, Sam Milby I always dress him up during Star Magic Ball, Daniel Matsunaga,” he shared during the Bayo at 25 anniversary fashion show held last September 25 in Makati city.

With this year’s Star Magic Ball just a few days away, Francis shared his top tips on how he makes celebrities stand out on the red carpet. “I would always ask the ones that I’m dressing up, ‘Always visualize yourself on that red carpet already.’ You could have a really nice gown but if your attitude, your confidence is lacking, it’s a disaster already. Always have that right mindset and everything will follow. Maski ang suot mo ganyan kaikli pero basta you have the attitude to walk down that red carpet it will be a perfect combination,” he explained.

When it comes to dressing up male celebrities, Francis said he just has a simple rule to live by. “I would always look at myself when designing for men. I would always ask myself, ‘How would I want to look like? Classic but there’s something different. There’s a border between being wearable and too avante garde for a guy. Guys are very simple pag nagbibihis. May line between iba yung iniisip. Baka isipin nila ibang gender you know or what. But there’s a specific line when dressing up guys in general na parang very defined and refined but there’s still something different to it. So I would always ask them, ‘What would you like to look like on the red carpet?’ That’s my design process. I wouldn’t design something just for the sake of me telling them or directing them what to wear. But I want to feel confident on the red carpet,” he added.

With his designs consistently being featured on best dressed lists, the Bayo at 25 designer shared his experiences with different Star Magic celebrities over the years.

Daniel Padilla

“It’s always directed to what he wants. Last year I dressed Daniel Padilla up. With Daniel naman, he always has this vision of what he wants to look like on the red carpet which is easier for me, for any designer to dress up Daniel because he has a specific idea already. That alone saves us 50% of what we’re doing.”

Xian Lim

“With Xian naman before he was so afraid to experiment with a lot of things. But right now he’s open to looking different. Charming kasi so you can never make him look avante garde. It’s not his personality but it’s classic with a twist. Ganun lang.”

Kisses Delavin

“Kisses’s gown is very interesting. One thing I like about Kisses is her personality. She’s easy to work with. Ang sarap makatrabaho yung mga ganung stars because she’ll give your best and because they appreciate what you’re doing”
