REVIEW: Five Things To Love About ‘Love You To The Stars and Back’

After debuting their love team in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival entry Vince and Kath and James, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto are taking their tandem to new and otherworldly heights through the Star Cinema film Love You to the Stars and Back.

Joshua and Julia teamed up for the first time with blockbuster hugot director Antoinette Jadaone for their second big screen project that had them giving life to the characters Caloy and Mika.

While many things have been said about the film, we’re listing the five things that we actually adored about JoshLia’s “alien” film.

1. The theme song
Moira Dela Torre is fast becoming the favorite theme song performer of today. After her soulful performance of the Camp Sawi theme song “Malaya,” Moira returned into the theme song scene with her stripped version of Moonstar88’s “Torete.” The song virtually added a certain emotion to the film that many are now finding so hard to shake off whenever they hear the said song.

2. The concept
In an age when rom-com and horrors flicks are reigning supreme, it’s always nice to hear about an “alien” flick that centers on two teens who are trying to come to terms with their own issues. Even if the concept seemed quite laughable at first, Direk Tonet, as the film’s director and screenwriter, was able to keep the eccentric idea intact and well-executed throughout the whole film.

3. The emotional moments
Julia and Joshua were able to set their love team apart from the other tandems their age through their obvious depth and maturity when approaching dramatic scenes. If you’ve come to love them on VKJ and in their Maalaala Mo Kaya episode, then LYSB is something that you shouldn’t miss because Joshua and Julia definitely leveled up as far as acting is concerned.

4. The extra
Joining Joshua and Julia in the film was another character that played a crucial role in LYSB. This character was no less than the chicken Goldie, whom their characters treated as their child during the entire film.

5. The stars
The film’s highlight is undoubtedly the tandem of Joshua and Julia and their exceptional acting skills. Since their first pairing, the two have been continuously pushing themselves to the limit, as far as acting is concerned. This time though, a deeper and more mature Joshua and Julia emerged and showed that they can offer more than just kilig to their legions of followers. Not only that, their performance also proves that they are now ready to take on bigger roles from here on out.
