REVIEW: Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’ in Manila is one fun musical comedy ride

You don’t need to be a fan of the popular ‘70s British comedy group Monty Python or even have to be British in order to enjoy the whimsical trip back in time to the Arthurian era to enjoy the local adaptation of the Tony award winning play Spamalot. Brought to life in the country by Upstart Productions and directed by Joel Trinidad, Spamalot promises over two hours of intelligently silly banter and equally ridiculous but enjoyable situations.

The story starts off with King Arthur and his loyal assistant Patsy traveling all over the land in order to search for knights to bring to the round table. During their journey, they meet equally ridiculous and hilarious characters that basically guarantee no down time in what one foreign review described as “one laugh a minute.” With a cast led by stage veterans Lorenz Martinez (King Arthur), Rachel Alejandro and Carla Laforteza (who both alternate for the role of Lady in the Lake), expect a rollercoaster ride of a comedy that doesn’t need a backstory.

As long you don’t take English history too seriously (at least for the duration of the show), Spamalot is good clean fun for audience members young and old. Based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot reacquaints old fans with some of the original British troupe’s most popular sketches while endearing the Monty Python brand of classic comedy to a new generation of audiences as well.

The Philippine production of Monty Python’s Spamalot will play all Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until August 12 at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium at the RCBC Plaza in Makati. Tickets at P2,000 (Orchestra Center), P1,800 (Orchestra Side), P1,500 (Lodge), and P1,000 (Balcony). Get your tickets at Ticketworld at 891-9999 or Upstart Productions at 0917-8116156 or [email protected]
