EXCLUSIVE: Gian Magdangal reveals why he left showbiz for three years

After working abroad for more than three and a half years, Gian Magdangal said he’s happy to be back on his home turf as he plays the lead role in Resort World Manila’s upcoming musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Gian considers it a blessing to return to the same stage that won him Best Male Performer in a special production at the Aliw Awards in 2010. “That’s why I’m so grateful. I owe a lot to Resorts World. It really opened more doors for me. One year and a half yun tumakbo. Very memorable sa akin yun and I haven’t done a show yet na mapapantayan yung ganung level na local,” he shared.

Gian said that his experience abroad was one big adventure for him as a performer. “In Hong Kong Disney(land) I played the genie in Aladdin and I played the Shang in Mulan. And I also sang the theme song of the 10th year anniversary in front of the castle. In Japan in Universal Studios I sang for most of their special events. I didn’t play a character. I played myself lang. It was an honor to perform for them. I just got back recently because I was back for Disney’s Newsies under 9Works Theatrical and Globe. And then now I’m doing something else for Resorts World so parang full circle,” he explained.

Playing the lead role of Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Gian looks forward to performing for his fellow Pinoys again. “This show is going to be at the later part of this year but we’re going to be rehearsing na and of course I’ve got the benefit show end of the month. I miss the people. I miss performing for the Filipinos here. Iba yung tanggap ng tao and yung pagkanta siyempre ng Tagalog, OPM. Iba yun eh. Hindi mo mapapalitan yun. I really missed performing our own. Siyempre parang iba yung pagbalik nung gifts mo, nung talent mo, ganyan. Iba yung pagbalik mo ng totoong mensahe para sa mga taong gusto nating pasayahin na sariling atin. Iba yun eh. Iba yung kumbaga balik nun sa ‘yo as a performer. Kumbaga nakakataba talaga ng puso,” he shared.

Another big reason that brought him back to the country is his son Haley. “Primarily I wanted to come back to spend more time with my family, with my son. I have a kid eh nine years old. Iba naman yung simple gesture na pagsundo sa school malaking bagay yun eh. At saka yung spending time talaga. Hindi mo mapapalitan yun ng kahit anong pagkita sa ibang bansa eh. But the experience abroad really helped me become a more well-rounded artist. Also to remind me that the older I get I have to be innovative with my craft. And also the professionalism, especially in countries like Japan strikto sila dun. At saka it really made me keep up with my game lalo na yung mga kasama ko mag-perform taga iba-ibang bansa eh. Hindi tayo magpapatalo diyan (laughs) yung ganun,” he said.
